Senior Data Engineer - Operations
12 month contract + likely extensions | Hybrid | Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney
The Role
We're hiring a Senior Data Engineer to operate and optimize our enterprise data warehouse and cloud analytics platform. You'll own daily BAU - ETL pipelines, SQL tuning, month-end processing and data-related support requests - while contributing to process improvement across the platform. The team values engineering discipline, clean code and reliable delivery.
What You'll Do
- Develop, maintain and optimize ETL pipelines and analytical SQL code
- Tune and performance-test queries - conduct peer reviews on data models and code
- Support month-end close and respond to ad-hoc business data requests
- Collaborate with business stakeholders and technical teams to debug data issues and deliver solutions
- Contribute to release planning and continuous improvement of data engineering standards
- Produce technical documentation and maintain data dictionaries
What We're After
- Proven experience developing and supporting enterprise data warehouse and data integration solutions
- Expert SQL: development, optimization, tuning and code review in production
- Hands-on competency in at least two of - MS SQL, Teradata, Snowflake, Redshift or Databricks
- High-level programming with SQL, Python, SAS, R or Java
- Real experience with DevOps, version control (Git) and software delivery practices
- Ability to read and apply data models, technical specs and solution designs

- Enterprise reporting platforms
- Metadata or model-driven frameworks
- Tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, IT, Statistics or Data Science
- Agile delivery experience
The Detail
- Start: 7th September 2026
- Duration: 12 months + 1 × 12-month extension option
- Hours: 37.5 per week
- Location: ACT, VIC, or NSW (hybrid – minimum 3 days in office)
- Rate: $140/h (including superannuation)
- Security: Must be able to obtain Negative Vetting Level 1
- Citizenship: Australian citizen only
