About the Role
Reporting to the Head of Data and Data Governance, the Senior Data Engineer is responsible for the design, development, support and optimisation of ESSSuper's Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), data integration solutions and enterprise data pipelines.
You will work closely with business stakeholders, technology teams and data governance functions to deliver reliable, secure and high-quality data assets that support reporting, analytics, operational processes and regulatory obligations.

About the Role
Reporting to the Head of Data and Data Governance, the Senior Data Engineer is responsible for the design, development, support and optimisation of ESSSuper's Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), data integration solutions and enterprise data pipelines.
You will work closely with business stakeholders, technology teams and data governance functions to deliver reliable, secure and high-quality data assets that support reporting, analytics, operational processes and regulatory obligations.
Key Responsibilities
Enterprise Data Platform
- Design, develop, test and support enterprise data pipelines, ETL/ELT processes and integration solutions.
- Build and optimise data solutions using Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Fabric and related technologies.
- Translate business requirements into scalable, secure and governed technical solutions.
- Support and enhance the Enterprise Data Warehouse to ensure reliability, performance and data integrity.
- Develop and maintain APIs and integration services.
- Participate across the full solution lifecycle, including analysis, design, development, testing, deployment and ongoing support.
- Contribute to data modelling, architecture and integration design activities.
- Identify automation opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce manual effort.
- Monitor and maintain the health of the Enterprise Data Platform.
- Troubleshoot and resolve data pipeline failures, performance issues and technical defects.
- Contribute to resilience, disaster recovery and operational readiness activities.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, including data models, mappings, ETL specifications, solution designs and support procedures.
- Drive platform improvements, reduce technical debt and enhance supportability.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across the Data team.
- Collaborate effectively with business stakeholders, vendors and technology teams.
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Support project delivery and business change initiatives requiring data expertise.
You are a hands-on Senior Data Engineer with a passion for building modern, scalable data platforms and delivering high-quality solutions that create business value.
Essential Skills & Experience
- 5+ years' experience in Data Engineering, Data Warehousing or Data Integration roles.
- Strong SQL development and performance tuning skills.
- Strong Python development skills.
- Strong understanding of data modelling principles, including dimensional and analytical models.
- Experience designing and maintaining enterprise-scale data pipelines.
- Experience with API integration and data transfer patterns.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices; Azure Devops preferred; other tools also considered.
- Experience with Azure data services.
- “Experience with at least one cloud native data platform – Fabric/Snowflake/Databricks. Fabric preferred; others also considered.
- Experience working within Agile delivery environments.
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Microsoft Fabric, Snowflake or Databricks certification.
- Experience working within regulated or governance-focused environments.
- Tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
