Job Overview
We're looking for an NV1 Senior Data Engineer to join a federal government digital health agency. You'll own the design, build and maintenance of data pipelines and analytics solutions that enable high-quality decision-making across the health system.

This is a hybrid contract role based in Sydney or Canberra, with flexibility to work remote most of the week (1 day/week onsite). You'll work autonomously under broad direction, take ownership of end-to-end solutions and contribute to platform strategy.

Our client is a federal government agency responsible for enabling digital health solutions across Australia. They're building modern, data-driven platforms to improve healthcare delivery and decision-making.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, build and maintain scalable data pipelines to ingest, transform and publish data.
  • Develop and optimise data models and curated datasets for reporting and analytics.
  • Establish and maintain strong data quality practices, including monitoring, validation and issue resolution.
  • Analyse complex data problems, identify root causes and deliver practical solutions.
  • Support analytical use cases by preparing and curating high-quality datasets.
  • Take ownership of deliverables and manage competing priorities to deliver high-quality outcomes.
  • Provide expert advice on complex data engineering issues and contribute to strategic platform direction.
  • Collaborate closely with data analysts, data scientists and business stakeholders.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts in clear, plain language to non-technical audiences.
  • Apply modern data engineering practices, including testing, automation and performance optimisation.
Must-Have Requirements
  • NV1 security clearance (or eligible to obtain) + Australian citizenship.
  • 7+ years as a data engineer, with strong expertise in modern cloud platforms.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Python (PySpark), SQL and Power BI.
  • Proven experience designing and building scalable data pipelines (medallion/delta lake architecture preferred).
  • Experience shipping data solutions in government, healthcare, finance or other regulated environments.
  • Strong communication skills - you can explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work autonomously, take ownership and manage competing priorities.
Desirable
  • Azure data platform certifications (Data Engineer, Solutions Architect).
  • Experience with data governance, data quality frameworks or data vault modelling.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Azure DevOps).
  • Background in healthcare or government digital transformation.
The Role
  • Location: Sydney or Canberra (hybrid, 1 day/week onsite)
  • Duration: 12 months (with 12 month extension option)
  • Hours: 37.5 per week, core hours 8:30am - 5:00pm Mon - Fri
  • Rate: $140 - 160 per hour (inc. superannuation)
  • Start Date: Monday, 12th October 2026
