Senior Data Engineer
Summary
Senior Data Engineer at MOPAC (the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime) will help build and then own PRISM, a new secure cloud data platform on Azure that unites police, health and local authority data to help reduce violence in London. Day to day: building automated pipelines and leading data architecture, governance and security, feeding Power BI dashboards and analytics.
Thank you for your interest in a role at the MOPAC. We are excited to hear about your experiences.
Join us to make London a safer city for everyone.
Help reduce violence in London, and take ownership of the data platform to do it
The Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) is the organisation through which the Mayor of London exercises his role as the Police and Crime Commissioner for London and is led by the Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime. MOPAC undertakes a broad range of statutory duties and works closely with the Mayor of London, Deputy Mayor, and Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) to deliver the priorities that will create safer London communities.
London has a proud history of agencies sharing data to keep people safe. Police, health, local authority and partner data brought together and used well, helps analysts understand where violence is happening and where support is needed most.
Now we're building the next chapter.
PRISM (Partnership Resource for Insight and Safety Management)
PRISM (Partnership Resource for Insight and Safety Management) is MOPAC's new data platform. It brings police, health, local authority and partner datasets into one secure, modern, cloud-based environment, with automated pipelines, well-documented data and self-service access, and with mapping and forecasting tools planned to follow. It directly supports the Mayor's commitment to reducing violence and improving public safety, as set out in the Police and Crime Plan 2025‑2029.
The build is getting started right now, with specialist consultants helping to kick‑start it. You'd join as it takes shape, work alongside them from the start, and then take ownership of the data pipeline aspects of the platform as it grows.
Why you’ll want this job
- Get in at the start. You’ll join while PRISM is still taking shape, helping to influence how it's built and learning it from the inside. You won't be handed a finished system and told to keep it running.
- Take it on and make it yours. The platform will be yours to run, improve and expand. You'll lead on data architecture, governance and security, with a real say in how it evolves as more partners and datasets join.
- Work that matters. What you build will help local authorities and partners across London understand violence and target support where it's needed most.
- A team that's growing. You'll join an ambitious and growing data function on modern Azure infrastructure, with the freedom to bring new ideas and strong support for learning and development.
Beyond PRISM: your pipelines will power work across MOPAC
PRISM will be your main focus at first, but it's one part of a wider data science and engineering programme. MOPAC oversees the MPS, commissions support for victims and funds crime prevention, so the data work is varied. The data you engineer will feed:
- Measuring whether London is getting safer. The data behind how MOPAC tracks progress on violence, trust and confidence, victim satisfaction and the criminal justice system, through Power BI dashboards that help senior leaders hold the MPS to account and decide where to act.
- Forecasting and predictive modelling. Research that helps anticipate crime patterns and inform where resources go.
- AI and automation. Tools such as automated meeting transcription, analysis of large public consultations and chatbots, all of which depend on reliable, well‑governed data.
- Products for the wider system. We build analytical tools and services that are shared with the wider GLA family and policing partners, so the quality of your pipelines shapes how useful they are.
You’ll work side by side with data scientists and performance analysts, so you’ll see your work used quickly.
If you want your data engineering to have a visible, real‑world impact from day one, we'd love to hear from you.
Political Restriction: under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989 (as amended by the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011), all MOPAC staff members will be politically restricted without the right to apply for an exemption.
The successful candidates will be expected to undergo the necessary security checks. Applicants must possess the legal right to work in the UK and have resided in the UK continuously for at least the last three years.
