Senior Data Platform Engineer
Make your mark from day Dot. We’re hiring a Senior Data Platform Engineer to shape the platforms behind our products and insights.
About the role
This is a Wellington-based role on the Dot Platform Team. As a Senior Data Platform Engineer you'll play a key role in delivering our mission by building and running robust, scalable and elegant data systems that embody our philosophy of simple, smart, and beautiful. You'll design and maintain high-quality data pipelines, databases and processing frameworks; engineer reliable, fault-tolerant infrastructure; and create innovative data solutions that support both batch and real-time needs. You'll be at the forefront of how Dot uses AI, building the shared tooling and guardrails that make our workflows faster, smarter and safer by design.
This role has a strong platform and operations focus. Alongside building, you'll co-own how our platform runs in production: deployment, monitoring, observability, cost and incident response, so the pipelines and client data feeds our customers rely on are delivered on time, day in day out. You'll draw on strong engineering expertise, curiosity and a drive to innovate, and collaborate across the business to build secure, scalable foundations for Dot's next generation of data products and services.
Key responsibilities
Build, maintain and monitor efficient, robust and reliable data pipelines
Co-ownership of the operational health of the data platform, including monitoring, alerting, data quality checks and observability, so issues are caught before they reach clients
Ensure scheduled client data feeds are delivered reliably and on time, leading incident response and root-cause analysis when things go wrong
Build and improve CI/CD, automated testing and deployment workflows across development, test and production environments
Manage platform infrastructure, environments, access control and configuration, using infrastructure-as-code and automation where possible
Monitor and optimise Snowflake and cloud compute and storage costs
Develop data engineering tools and applications
Data modelling, including designing efficient and scalable schemas
Document pipelines, codebases, runbooks, processes and best practices
Translate business requirements into data solutions, pipelines or tools
Contribute to system architecture discussions and provide recommendations
Collaborate with data scientists, product managers, clients and other stakeholders to prioritise work and ensure data needs are met
Participate in peer reviews, help build capability in the team, including operational standards and best practice
Ensure data quality, security, governance, and compliance across all systems
About you
You’re a proactive and collaborative engineer who works well both independently and as part of a team. You care as much about how data systems run as how they’re built, and you like automating problems away rather than fixing them twice. You manage your time effectively, maintain strong attention to detail, and take pride in delivering high-quality, reliable work. You’re comfortable navigating complex data challenges, communicating clearly with others, and contributing positively to a supportive, high-performing team environment.
Snowflake - Experience working directly with Snowflake including administration such as access control, warehouse configuration and cost management. Experience with other warehousing and database platforms e.g. Postgres additionally beneficial
AWS - Experience with core cloud services and infrastructure
SQL - Proficiency in writing efficient queries for high-volume datasets
dbt - Hands-on experience with modelling, transformations, testing and orchestration
Python - Solid experience with data-focused libraries such as pandas and NumPy, as well as experience building API integrations and automation
ETL/ELT & Data Architecture - Solid understanding of data warehousing concepts, transformation patterns, schema design and best practices
DataOps Practices - Version control, testing patterns, CI/CD, environment promotion and scalable design
Monitoring & Observability - Experience setting up alerting, data quality checks and pipeline monitoring, and owning production incidents through to resolution
Orchestration - Ability to create and configure pipelines for automation
AI tooling – A strong drive to explore, build and scale secure AI tooling and infrastructure, enabling greater efficiency and innovation across Dot
End to end delivery - Experience planning and leading implementation of data pipelines, tools, prototypes and proofs-of-concept
