Job Title: Senior dbt Engineer / dbt Developer
Experience: 7+ Years
Required Skills: dbt, Advanced SQL, Data Modelling, ETL/ELT, Cloud Data Warehousing
Work Mode: Onsite
Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced dbt Engineer / dbt Developer with 7+ years of overall IT experience to design, develop, optimize, and maintain scalable data transformation solutions using dbt (data build tool).
The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in SQL, data modelling, ELT pipeline development, and modern cloud data platforms. The candidate will be responsible for transforming raw data into reliable, analytics-ready datasets, implementing data quality checks, optimizing transformation workflows, and maintaining production-grade data models.
The role involves close collaboration with data engineers, analytics engineers, data architects, and business stakeholders to deliver high-quality, scalable, and maintainable data solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain data transformation models using dbt Core or dbt Cloud.
- Build scalable ELT pipelines to transform raw data into curated, analytics-ready datasets.
- Write complex and optimized SQL queries, including joins, CTEs, window functions, and aggregations.
- Develop and maintain dbt models using staging, intermediate, and mart layers.
- Implement data modelling techniques, including dimensional modelling, star schemas, and fact and dimension tables.
- Configure and maintain dbt sources, seeds, snapshots, macros, tests, and reusable Jinja templates.
- Implement data quality checks, schema tests, custom tests, and data validation mechanisms.
- Optimize SQL transformations, incremental models, and materializations to improve performance and reduce compute costs.
- Manage model dependencies and execution order using dbt DAGs.
- Integrate dbt workflows with orchestration tools and cloud data platforms.
- Implement version control, code reviews, and CI/CD processes for data transformation projects.
- Troubleshoot failed models, data discrepancies, dependency issues, and production incidents.
- Maintain documentation for data models, sources, transformations, and business definitions.
- Collaborate with business analysts and data teams to translate business requirements into reliable data models.
- Support deployment, monitoring, release management, and continuous improvement of data pipelines.
Mandatory Technical Skills
- dbt: Strong hands-on experience with dbt Core and/or dbt Cloud, including model development, testing, documentation, and deployment.
- SQL: Advanced SQL skills with experience writing complex queries and optimizing transformations.
- ELT/ETL: Strong understanding of data integration, transformation pipelines, and modern data warehouse architectures.
- Data Modelling: Experience with dimensional modelling, star schemas, fact and dimension tables, and analytical data structures.
- Jinja & Macros: Experience using Jinja templating and reusable dbt macros.
- Testing & Data Quality: Proficiency in dbt tests, data validation, source freshness checks, and troubleshooting data quality issues.
- Incremental Processing: Experience with incremental models, snapshots, materializations, and model dependency management.
- Version Control: Hands-on experience with Git, branching strategies, and code reviews.
- Cloud Data Warehousing: Experience with at least one platform such as Snowflake, Databricks, Google BigQuery, or Amazon Redshift.
- Production Support: Ability to troubleshoot, optimize, and maintain production data transformation workflows.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with dbt Cloud, job scheduling, environment management, and deployment workflows.
- Exposure to orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow, Dagster, or Prefect.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
- Familiarity with CI/CD tools and automated testing frameworks.
- Experience with Python for automation, data validation, or supporting data engineering tasks.
- Knowledge of data governance, lineage, metadata management, and access controls.
- Experience with performance tuning, query cost optimization, and large-scale data processing.
- Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies and collaborative development practices.
Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum 7+ years of overall IT experience, with substantial hands-on experience in SQL and data engineering.
- Proven experience developing and maintaining production-grade data transformation solutions using dbt.
- Strong understanding of modern data stack architecture and cloud data warehousing.
- Demonstrated ability to build reusable, testable, documented, and maintainable data models.
- Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
Expected Candidate Profile
