Onsite in Toronto five days a week.

Position Overview
The Government of Ontario is seeking a highly experienced Senior DevOps / Cloud Engineer to design, implement, and maintain enterprise-grade DevOps practices and cloud operations within Microsoft Azure environments. The successful candidate will combine strong DevOps and automation expertise with hands-on software development and troubleshooting capabilities to support reliable, secure, and repeatable delivery across development, testing, staging, and production environments.
The selected consultant will be responsible for building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, implementing infrastructure as code, automating deployments, managing cloud environments, and improving platform observability, security, scalability, and resilience. The role requires practical experience with Azure infrastructure and platform services, networking, identity management, monitoring, and security, as well as the ability to support microservices, APIs, distributed applications, and cloud-based development tools.
Working closely with developers, solution architects, testers, cybersecurity specialists, and operations teams, the Senior DevOps / Cloud Engineer will develop reusable tools and automation, troubleshoot complex application and deployment issues, support release management, and establish operational practices that improve developer productivity and enterprise service reliability.
Key Responsibilities
1. DevOps Engineering and Automation
  • Design, develop, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines for application code, integrations, infrastructure changes, and database deployments.
  • Implement deployment automation and infrastructure as code (IaC) to enable consistent, repeatable, and reliable environment provisioning.
  • Manage complex release processes across development, testing, staging, and production environments.
  • Develop reusable scripts, utilities, APIs, internal tools, and automation components using modern programming languages.
  • Apply software development best practices, including source control, code reviews, unit testing, debugging, refactoring, and technical documentation.
  • Automate configuration management, environment setup, deployment validation, and operational workflows.
  • Improve deployment consistency, traceability, release efficiency, and developer experience.
2. Microsoft Azure and Cloud Operations
  • Provision, configure, operate, and maintain Microsoft Azure infrastructure and platform services.
  • Support Azure networking, identity and access management, security configurations, monitoring, and cloud resource management.
  • Operate and support microservices, APIs, distributed applications, and cloud-based development tools.
  • Configure and maintain application environments, dependencies, connectivity, and deployment settings.
  • Assist development teams in diagnosing and resolving application code issues, dependency conflicts, build failures, automated test failures, integration problems, pipeline errors, and deployment issues.
  • Troubleshoot complex cloud infrastructure, application performance, availability, connectivity, and environment configuration issues.
  • Support integration between applications, cloud services, development tools, and deployment platforms.
3. Reliability, Security, and Monitoring
  • Implement and maintain logging, monitoring, alerting, dashboards, tracing, and operational health checks.
  • Monitor platform performance, availability, resource utilization, and application health to identify and resolve operational issues.
  • Support incident response, root-cause analysis, recovery procedures, and production stabilization.
  • Implement secure configuration practices, secrets management, certificate management, and access controls.
  • Support vulnerability remediation, security controls, and compliance requirements throughout the deployment lifecycle.
  • Develop and maintain backup, recovery, rollback, and disaster recovery procedures.
  • Improve system resilience, scalability, recoverability, operational readiness, and service reliability.
4. Release Management and Production Support
  • Coordinate release activities, environment readiness assessments, deployment execution, validation, and post-release stabilization.
  • Establish repeatable deployment, rollback, and recovery procedures to minimize service disruption.
  • Diagnose and resolve production incidents involving applications, infrastructure, pipelines, integrations, and deployment configurations.
  • Collaborate with application development and testing teams to resolve build, integration, automated testing, and release issues.
  • Maintain operational runbooks, configuration records, deployment procedures, technical documentation, and knowledge-transfer materials.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce manual effort, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen platform supportability.
5. Stakeholder Collaboration and Technical Documentation
  • Work collaboratively with software developers, architects, QA specialists, cybersecurity teams, infrastructure teams, and operational stakeholders.
  • Provide technical guidance on DevOps practices, deployment automation, environment configuration, and production support.
  • Communicate technical issues, risks, dependencies, and proposed resolutions clearly to relevant stakeholders.
  • Document technical solutions, operational procedures, automation workflows, and troubleshooting recommendations.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on secure software delivery and sustainable enterprise operations.
