Job Description

Senior Electrical Engineer – HV Substation Design & Protection

Experience: 10+ years | Employment: Full-time | Level: Senior / Principal

Salary: $140,000–$200,000 base salary + benefits

The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to take a leading technical role across high-voltage substation design, protection, and power systems projects.

This position is suited to an engineer with extensive transmission-level substation experience who can take ownership of technically complex projects, work directly with utility stakeholders, and provide technical guidance to other engineers.

You will be involved across the full project lifecycle, from engineering and protection studies through to utility coordination, technical review, and project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead electrical engineering activities for high-voltage substations from approximately 69kV through 345kV.
  • Develop, review, and coordinate protection and control schemes, including protective relay settings.
  • Produce and review relay settings using SEL protection platforms.
  • Carry out and technically review power system studies using industry-standard software such as ETAP and SKM.
  • Support substation interconnection, protection, metering, and related utility requirements.
  • Act as a senior technical point of contact for utility and project stakeholders.
  • Review engineering deliverables and provide technical direction to other engineers.
  • Support the development of protection engineering standards, processes, and best practices.
  • Mentor and develop less-experienced engineers within the wider electrical engineering team.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • 10+ years of relevant electrical engineering experience, with substantial exposure to high-voltage substation design and protection.
  • Strong practical experience across 69kV–345kV transmission/substation projects.
  • Demonstrable experience developing protective relay settings, particularly on SEL platforms.
  • Strong understanding of IEEE protection standards, including applicable IEEE C37 standards.
  • Working knowledge of NERC PRC requirements and transmission protection compliance.
  • Experience using ETAP, SKM, or comparable power system analysis software.
  • Previous experience working directly with electric utilities, transmission owners, or other grid stakeholders.
  • Strong technical communication skills and the ability to take ownership of complex engineering assignments.

Desirable Experience

  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) licence.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary substation projects from concept/design through delivery.
  • Experience working with multiple transmission utilities and/or ISOs/RTOs.
  • Experience across interconnection, metering, protection coordination, and utility technical requirements.
  • Previous responsibility for mentoring or technically supervising other engineers.

Compensation & Benefits

  • $140,000–$200,000 base salary, depending on experience, technical capability, location, and qualifications.
  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • Professional development and career progression opportunities.
  • Opportunity to work on complex transmission and critical power infrastructure projects.
