Senior Electrical Design Engineer

Mission

TAR’s mission is to power intelligence for the world. We are building the world’s first off-grid power plant for data centers powered by renewable technologies.

We firmly believe AI should be built in the US for the benefit of all people. For that, power must be fast, clean and scalable. We are singularly focused on delivering GW-scale power faster than anyone has ever done, by rethinking every layer of the stack.

We vertically integrate to solve every bottleneck, from racking systems to power electronics to dispatch algorithms to on-site construction.

Leave your mark on the future of civilization-scale energy infrastructure.

Company

TAR is both a hardware and software company, we are building out massive, critical, physical infrastructure. (TAR is working directly with one of the largest compute providers to scale and deploy 5GWs by 2028)

We operate on…

  • High ownership. High Agency. Own project end-to-end. Great people don’t need to be managed.

  • Speed. We achieve great things on incredible timelines. We push ourselves to go faster.

  • First principles. No ego. No hierarchy. Challenge every assumption.

  • Passion. Solving the energy problem is one of the largest challenges that faces the world now and in the future.

About the role

TAR builds fully islanded, behind-the-meter microgrids (solar, BESS, and gas peakers) powering AI data centers in West Texas at record speed. As Electrical Design Engineer, you own the electrical design documentation that turns architecture into a buildable plant: single-line and three-line diagrams, wiring schedules, and system schematics for islanded BTM microgrids. You size the system, conductors, OCPD, disconnects, and switchgear across MV, LV, and DC collection, and you produce the technical inputs and basis-of-design the Engineer of Record (EOR) stamps against. You work day-to-day under the Director of Power Systems Engineering, translating system architecture into the drawing set that procurement, the EOR, and the field all build from.

One scope note on what this role is and is not. We integrate utility-scale equipment and run an external Engineer of Record as our engineering-of-record agent. You own the design basis, the drawing set, and design quality and turnaround, and you coordinate the EOR's review and stamp; you are not the project's stamping engineer of record. You also are not laying out controls logic, which sits with the controls engineer; you produce the electrical design those controls integrate into.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain electrical single-line and three-line diagrams, wiring schedules, and system schematics for islanded BTM microgrids.

  • Size conductors, OCPD, disconnects, and switchgear across MV/LV and DC collection in compliance with NEC, UL 1741-SB, UL 9540, and NFPA 855.

  • Produce the basis-of-design and technical inputs the Engineer of Record requires, and coordinate the EOR's review and stamp.

  • Develop equipment layouts and DC collection designs (string/harness, combiner, inverter skid, MV collector) for ground-mount PV + BESS.

  • Maintain the drawing set through revisions from design through IFC, keeping procurement, the EOR, and field execution working from one source of truth.

  • Support OEM technical evaluation (inverter skids, BESS, MV switchgear) with the electrical inputs needed for selection and PO.

  • Track FEOC-compliant equipment options where ITC eligibility is at stake.

Qualifications

  • BSEE, power systems, or related STEM discipline.

  • 3+ years in utility-scale solar, BESS, or power-systems design, with hands-on ownership of SLDs/three-lines and equipment sizing.

  • Proficiency in electrical CAD (AutoCAD Electrical or similar) and a power-system study tool (SKM, ETAP, CYME, or similar).

  • Strong understanding of NEC, NESC, IEEE standards; working knowledge of UL 1741-SB, UL 9540/9540A, and NFPA 855 for PV and energy-storage integration.

  • Conductor, OCPD, disconnect, and switchgear sizing across DC, LV, and MV (34.5 kV class).

  • Experience producing basis-of-design and working to or with an Engineer of Record.

  • Extreme attention to detail with a bias for speed and rapid iteration.

Nice to have

  • Direct ground-mount utility-scale PV + BESS design experience.

  • MV collector, MV switchgear, and substation-adjacent design exposure (up to 500kV).

  • Islanded, off-grid, or BTM microgrid experience.

  • Familiarity with grid-forming vs grid-following inverter architecture at the system level.

  • ERCOT / Texas project experience.

  • High-velocity, detail-rigorous engineering culture (Tesla Energy, SpaceX, Array, Nextracker, or comparable).

Salary and Benefits

  • Up to $15K relocation bonus

  • Unlimited PTO

  • Health, Dental, Vision insurance

  • $1K monthly stipend for meals
