Senior Electrical Substation Designer

Our client is an established engineering and infrastructure organization expanding its capabilities in electrical power delivery. As demand for reliable, modern energy infrastructure continues to grow, they are seeking a Senior Electrical Substation Designer to help deliver technically challenging projects and contribute to a growing design team. Focus:

• Develop detailed physical design drawings and construction-ready documentation for medium- and high-voltage substations, including new installations and existing facility upgrades.
• Prepare equipment arrangements, structural interface details, grounding layouts, cable routing plans, and other essential substation design deliverables.
• Develop precise, fully integrated AutoCAD layouts by incorporating technical design details, electrical system information, and project-specific equipment requirements.
• Work closely with electrical, civil, structural, and protection and control teams to integrate design requirements and resolve technical challenges.
• Manage assigned design packages from early development through final review, maintaining quality, consistency, and project schedules.
• Review manufacturer documentation, equipment dimensions, and technical specifications to support practical, constructible designs.
• Participate in design reviews, technical coordination meetings, and occasional field activities to address project requirements and construction questions.
• Provide technical guidance to less experienced designers, review drawing packages, and contribute to continuous improvement in design practices.

Skill Set:

• Minimum 5 years of hands-on substation physical design experience, ideally supporting utility, engineering consulting, or EPC projects.
• Strong AutoCAD proficiency and demonstrated experience preparing physical design packages for substations operating between 15kV and 500kV.
• Solid understanding of major substation components, including power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, buswork, grounding systems, and related equipment.
• Ability to interpret single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, electrical schematics, and technical documentation to develop accurate physical layouts.
• Working knowledge of IEEE, NESC, NEC, ANSI, and applicable utility or customer engineering standards.
• Associate degree in Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of technical training and practical experience.
• Proven ability to independently organize design assignments, manage deliverables, and communicate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Familiarity with specialized drafting and design platforms is advantageous, particularly when paired with a background in electrical infrastructure planning, facility configurations, or related technical assessments.
