Senior Electronics Engineer
Summary
Designs, builds, and tests embedded electronics systems (MCUs, PCBs, RF comms) for Arctic deployment, ensuring reliability in extreme environments with end-to-end hardware ownership from prototype to field testing.
FULL-TIME | ON-SITE
LOCATION: CALMSDEN, CIRENCESTER, UK - WITH FIELD TRAVEL
THE LAST FRONTIER
The Arctic is a place of extremes: unforgiving, untamed, and undergoing rapid change. A literal defrosting reveals a multi-trillion-dollar opportunity spanning energy, defence, logistics, research, and infrastructure.
Arctic Research and Development (ARD) was founded on a paradox. The Arctic is both the next great economic frontier and one of the most hostile environments on Earth. Rich in resources and strategically vital, yet bone-chillingly cold, dark for months, and fundamentally inhospitable to humans. This paradox—an explosion of activity in a place that resists human presence—is why we exist. Our solution is autonomy.
We build systems that operate reliably and intelligently in the Arctic, so that humans don't always have to.
Founded by record-holding pioneers with decades of polar experience, we take calculated risks on hard problems that matter. If you want to build and deploy ground-up technology with real-world impact, at an inflection point in history that won’t reappear, we’d like to talk.
THE ROLE
We’re looking for a Senior Electronics Engineer to design, build, and test all electrical systems within ARD’s product stack. You’ll work at the intersection of hardware, software, and real-world deployment making an impact at every layer – from the PCB to Arctic field tests. You’ll move fast and take end-to-end ownership in the electronic architecture you’ll build, ensuring seamless operation in the harshest climate on Earth.
* Please note: this role is not eligible for visa sponsorship *
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Architect, build, and iterate embedded systems from first principles - including MCUs, PCBs, physical comms modules, and ARD’s custom subsystems
Own electrical integration across ARD’s full stack, optimising for SWaP-C at every iteration
Serve as the go-to technical lead across electrical, RF, systems, and mechanical interfaces
Work tightly with deployment, software, and systems teams to ship field-ready hardware
Get hands-on in field – travel to Arctic test sites and client installations
REQUIREMENTS
7+ years of hands-on experience building electronics for real-world systems – ideally with exposure to battery-powered platforms, RF comms (MANET, LoRa), and pLEO/GEO satellite systems
Proven track record designing and debugging high-density, high-reliability PCBs for harsh environments
Degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with a portfolio ready to demonstrate
Skilled in RF testing and analysis (Spectrum analyser, Network Analyser, etc) and RF simulation tool suites
Confident soldering, PCB design, prototyping, and field-testing under pressure
Track record of delivering systems from sketch to deployment — managing time, cost, and complexity
Field-ready mindset — you're comfortable testing gear in sub-zero environments
Future Security Clearance Requirements
As our business scales into the defence and security sectors, the responsibilities of this role are expected to evolve to include projects requiring UK Security Check (SC) clearance.
While an active clearance is not required to apply or start in this role, candidates must be willing and eligible to undergo UK Government security vetting in the future should project requirements dictate it.
To meet the standard eligibility criteria for UK standard SC vetting, you must typically have resided in the UK for the past 5 continuous years, hold a valid passport, and be capable of passing comprehensive background, financial, and criminal record checks.
