Senior Engineer, Carbon Management
Job purpose
The Carbon Management Senior Engineer will lead the identification, development, and implementation of technical solutions that reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency across industrial operations. The job is responsible for conducting carbon audits, designing and overseeing carbon abatement plans throughout asset lifecycles, and integrating low-carbon technologies into existing and new projects. It also aims to drive continuous improvement by monitoring emissions performance, supporting research and development of advanced carbon management technologies, and providing specialized technical support to ensure successful delivery of carbon reduction initiatives and organizational sustainability objectives.
This role encompasses the development of manuals, procedures, and other documentation related to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions management issues, as well as active participation in both internal and external audit processes. The incumbent will be responsible for monitoring company practices to ensure compliance with carbon management guidelines. The engineer will analyze and update the carbon management procedures, develop comprehensive documentation, recommend performance measures and tools, and report on performance to asset owners and respective teams.
Key accountabilities
Carbon management planning
- Coordinate establishing baseline for GHG emissions and developing management and reporting mechanisms to maintain regular updating.
- Implement technical solutions for reducing carbon emissions in industrial processes.
- Conduct carbon audits and assessments to identify sources of emissions and potential reduction strategies.
- Develop and oversee carbon abatement plans that span design, utilization, and decommissioning stages.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate carbon reduction technologies, projects, and measures into existing systems and upcoming projects.
- Provide expert technical advice for solutions to reduce carbon emissions including mechanical, electrical, process, control, and building systems and equipment such as water and gas injection, pumping, and compression facilities.
- Review and analyze the work of consultants and contractors to provide professional recommendations to support the integrity and effectiveness of technical solutions for reducing carbon emissions in project development.
GHG emissions management processes and practices
- Develop and maintain the company’s specifications, standards, and procedures related to technical solutions for reducing carbon emissions to ensure consistency in engineering approaches.
- Monitor company practices to ensure compliance with relevant carbon management frameworks.
- Develop manuals, procedures, and documents to ensure consistent knowledge and practices related to GHG management issues and performance.
- Participate in internal audits and represent the company in external audit events.
- Ensure that GHG management practices align with local and international standards and best practices such as the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064.
GHG emissions performance
- Recommend performance measures, criteria, tools, limits, and frequency to ensure a reliable system for monitoring GHG emissions performance in the company.
- Monitor and optimize energy usage and emissions for improved efficiency and reduced environmental impact.
- Analyze energy performance to provide related recommendations for various types of assessments.
- Report and recommend on GHG emissions performance with asset owners and respective teams to share updates, status, and projects for timely plans or actions.
- Recommend actions and opportunities to reduce GHG emissions.
- Maintain reports, dashboards, and other records to ensure proper tracking and availability of GHG emissions data.
Research and improvements
- Conduct research and development on new carbon management technologies.
- Provide technical support for carbon reduction initiatives and projects.
- Identify and recommend opportunities for abatement improvements across company operations and facilities.
Documentation and reporting
- Develop and maintain comprehensive GHG emissions management documentation, including manuals and procedures.
- Prepare and maintain GHG emissions reports, dashboards, and other records to ensure proper tracking and availability of GHG emissions data.
- Generate detailed reports on GHG emissions performance and provide recommendations for improvements.
- Ensure alignment of documentation with local and international standards and regulations.
- Regularly update documentation to reflect changes in GHG emissions management practices and standards.
Compliance and audit participation
- Set up and ensure compliance with GHG emissions performance standards.
- Participate in internal audits to assess GHG emissions management practices and compliance.
- Represent the company in external audits and surveillance activities.
- Provide support and documentation for audit processes.
- Implement corrective actions based on audit findings and recommendations.
- Coordinate with auditors to address any non-compliance issues and ensure timely resolution.
Stakeholder collaboration
- Collaborate with asset owners and respective teams to share GHG emissions performance updates, status, and projects.
- Engage with external stakeholders to ensure compliance with GHG emissions management standards and regulations.
- Facilitate knowledge sharing and best practices in GHG emissions management within the organization.
- Foster a culture of energy efficiency and GHG emissions reduction across the organization.
Awareness and communication
Communicate and train focal points and process trainers to understand how their activities and behavior contribute to energy consumption and GHG emissions reduction objectives and targets.
Qualifications, experience, knowledge & skills
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, electrical engineering, or other relevant qualification.
- 10 years of experience in GHG, carbon, or environmental management.
- Well versed in English and Arabic languages.
