The incumbent will be part of WSP’s Intelligent Infrastructure - Lighting and Energy Solutions team, supporting the delivery of Road lighting design and associated electrical engineering services across UK infrastructure projects. The role focuses on developing coordinated, buildable, and maintainable lighting solutions for highways and exterior environments, working closely with multidisciplinary teams and UK-based stakeholders.

The incumbent will be responsible for undertaking lighting and electrical design activities for motorways, all-purpose trunk roads, local authority roads, transport hubs, public realm schemes, and related infrastructure. The role requires close collaboration with engineers, CAD technicians, and project stakeholders to deliver safe, compliant, energy-efficient, and BIM-compliant design solutions.

In addition, the role will support assessments for new and replacement lighting, application of sustainable technologies such as LED lighting, adaptive lighting, optical control, and remote management systems, and post-delivery services including as-built documentation, installation checks, witness testing, and photometric surveys where required.

This role is for a Senior Engineer within the Lighting and Energy Solutions team, supporting the delivery of Highway lighting projects for public and private sector clients.

Undertake lighting and associated electrical design activities including:

  • Lighting design for motorways, trunk roads, local roads, and public realm schemes

  • Lighting calculations, design coordination, and preparation of design documentation

  • Application of LED lighting, adaptive lighting, optical control, and remote management systems

  • Production and review of BIM-compliant drawings, layouts, and as-built information

  • Lighting assessments, energy-saving reviews, and consideration of environmental impact

  • Deliver design outputs in accordance with relevant UK standards, client requirements, and industry guidance, ensuring safe, buildable, maintainable, and compliant solutions.

Support project delivery activities including:

  • Undertaking assessments for new and replacement lighting schemes

  • Advising on energy, carbon, and environmental improvement opportunities

  • Preparing as-built lighting and electrical drawings and operational documentation

  • Engaging openly with stakeholders and delivery partners throughout the project lifecycle

Develop a clear understanding of project scope and ensure timely delivery of lighting and electrical design packages across schemes such as:

  • Strategic Road Network (motorways and all-purpose trunk roads)

  • Local authority roads and residential routes

  • Town centres, public realm, and urban environment projects

  • Public transport hubs and associated infrastructure

  • Commercial, industrial, car park, and sports area lighting schemes

Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including electrical engineers, lighting designers, CAD technicians, and external stakeholders, to ensure integrated and compliant designs.

Provide regular updates on project progress, risks, issues, and design changes to the line manager and project manager.

Coordinate with CAD technicians to ensure drawings are delivered accurately and in line with project timelines and standards.

Manage multiple design tasks effectively, ensuring outputs are clear, coordinated, and delivered to programme.

Participate in project and team meetings, contributing to technical discussions and maintaining a collaborative working environment.

Support and mentor junior engineers/technicians, including reviewing and checking design outputs where required.

Ensure Health & Safety considerations are embedded into all design activities in line with company policies and CDM requirements.

Support sustainability objectives by promoting energy-efficient lighting solutions, reduced environmental impact, and the adoption of innovative technologies across designs.

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical).

Experience Requirements

  • Min 6-8 years of hands‑on experience in Lighting Design for Infrastructure Projects.

Mandatory Skills

  • Hands-on experience in highway or exterior lighting design for infrastructure projects.

  • Working knowledge of UK lighting & Electrical standards (BS 5489, BS EN 13201, BS7671), ILP guidance notes, and design practices relevant to SRN and public realm projects.

  • Hands-on experience with Lighting Reality, DIALux, Amtech and Electrical OM.

  • Ability to coordinate design deliverables, manage workload priorities, and work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

Key Competencies

  • Ability to perform Lighting calculation, report preparation.
  • Sound knowledge of British standards and manuals.
  • Awareness of UK local authority specifications.
  • Experience in coordinating with DNO & Manufacturers.
  • Assists with establishing, maintaining, and enforcing the use of proper CAD standards and procedures.
  • Undertake reviews of work produced by others to ensure high quality of CAD output.
  • Proficient in the use of standard MS office software.
  • Commitment to work as part of a design team focused on project delivery.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
