Senior Engineer – Rock Mechanics
As a Senior Engineer – Rock Mechanics, you will be part of the Switzerland GCC Tunnel Team in WSP India, based in Bengaluru. The ideal candidate will have a background in Civil Engineering or Geology, with postgraduate qualifications in Geotechnical Engineering or Rock Mechanics. Experience related to embodied carbon reduction in design would be highly regarded.
The role will support a diverse portfolio of underground infrastructure, mining, and geo-energy projects in Switzerland and internationally. You will work alongside specialists within WSP’s global ground engineering network, delivering technically challenging projects across multiple sectors.
Rock Mechanics & Geotechnical Engineering
- Contribute to the planning, design, and delivery of geotechnical and rock mechanics services for tunnels, caverns, shafts, underground structures, and related infrastructure.
- Undertake rock mass characterisation through the interpretation of geological, geotechnical, laboratory, borehole, and field investigation data.
- Apply rock mass classification systems, including Q-System, RMR, and GSI, and associated empirical design methods.
- Develop geological and geotechnical ground models, including 3D geological and structural models using software such as Leapfrog Geo.
- Perform geotechnical assessments and stability analyses for underground excavations, tunnel portals, caverns, shafts, drifts, stopes, and rock slopes.
- Design and assess ground support systems, including rock bolts, cable bolts, shotcrete, mesh, steel ribs, and other support elements.
- Support tunnel and underground excavation design for Drill & Blast, NATM/SEM, and TBM excavation methods.
- Conduct rock mass stability assessments using empirical, analytical, and numerical modelling techniques.
- Carry out numerical modelling using industry-standard software, including:
- FLAC2D / FLAC3D
- DIPS
- PLAXIS 2D / 3D
- Rocscience Suite
- Evaluate excavation behaviour and optimise support systems based on project requirements and engineering analyses.
Team & Project Environment
- Work within the GCC Switzerland Tunnel Team, collaborating with multidisciplinary specialists and WSP’s global ground engineering network.
- Contribute to projects across underground infrastructure, tunnel and cavern engineering, shaft sinking, and the energy sector, including underground gas storage, salt caverns, hydropower, and geothermal developments.
- Support clients in delivering sustainable and future-ready solutions, with consideration of industry challenges such as decarbonisation and resource optimisation.
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, or a related discipline. Masters Preferred.
- Minimum 8 years of professional experience in rock mechanics, geotechnical engineering, or tunnel engineering.
- Experience in geotechnical investigations and rock mass characterisation.
- Proficiency in numerical modelling software, including FLAC2D/3D, DIPS, 3DEC, PLAXIS 2D/3D, and Rocscience Suite.
- Strong technical report writing and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary and international project teams.
