Senior civil/structural engineer designing substation steel frames, gantries, and concrete foundations to US codes, leading a small India-based team and coordinating with US colleagues.
WSP is currently seeking a Senior Engineer – Substation - Civil & Structural to join our Power department. Working out of our office in India, while collaborating closely with our office in USA, the Senior Engineer – Substation - Civil & Structural will report directly to the Structural Discipline Lead, Power & Energy, USA North. We are looking for a highly-motivated individual who has an excellent knowledge of the substation structural design field and is versatile working in large teams with international footprint. This position will initially be responsible for participating in T&D projects as a technical expert and project lead, however the ultimate goal is to build a small team of engineers and technicians in India, to potentially be led by the candidate or dedicated group leader, who could be semi-autonomous in delivering T&D projects.
- In support to multidisciplinary project managers located in USA North:
- Contribute to estimating engineering efforts for substation structural design;
- Contribute to project planning for substation structural design – delivery lists, Engineering Delivery Schedules;
- Contribute to technical project execution for substation structural design – steel and concrete design; civil design a plus;
- Supervise a team of intermediate and junior structural engineering contributors (located in India) for substation structural design;
- For single discipline projects, for which the main discipline is structural engineering of transmission level substations and switchyards:
- Lead the technical execution effort – monitor deadlines and perform QAQC;
- Lead technical aspects of projects – steel design, foundation design, drafting efforts, coordination with the HV electrical team in India and USA North, etc.
- Strongly contribute to the building and the development, as well as potentially the management, of a team specializing in the structural engineering of substations.
Key Competencies / Skills / Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil & Structural Engineering from an accredited university. Master’s degree is not required, but is a definitive asset;
10-12 years of experience in design and detailing of structural systems and foundations for transmission level substations or relevant experience in a similar role for projects with US design codes
Knowledge and mastery of USA structural building norms and Codes
Knowledge of the AISC steel manual and demonstrated design using the AISC 360
Knowledge of the ACI design code and demonstrated design using the ACI 318
Understanding of drafting and delivery of construction documents and specifications
Demonstrated proficiency with structural design software – RISA 3D, STAAD.Pro, RAM Structural Systems or similar software packages
Ability to execute with minimal direction from Project Engineer, ability to take initiative, ability to prioritize work independently.
Strong communication and organizational skills.
Strong ability to lead drafting designers in preparations of construction documents
Strong and demonstrated ability to coordinate structural design with civil design
Strong and demonstrated ability to execute structural design for steel frames, steel gantry’s, steel columns, steel structures supporting electrical wires, etc.
Strong and demonstrated ability to execute structural design for concrete foundations – drilled piers, shallow foundations, slab on grade, etc.
Very good English (spoken and written).
Licence to practice engineering in Canada and/or USA is not required, professional license is a plus.
