We’re looking for a seasoned diesel and heavy equipment mechanic who has seen it all, takes full ownership of the work, and sets the standard for how a shop should run. This role is critical to the safe and uninterrupted operation of our production teams. The right person works independently, makes sound calls under pressure, is comfortable with today’s diagnostic technology and digital record-keeping, communicates clearly with the people who depend on the fleet, and is the one others turn to when a problem gets tough. If you take pride in your craft and like making the people around you better at theirs, this is the role for you.

Responsibilities:

  • Fleet Maintenance & Repair
    • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on diesel trucks, gas vehicles, trailers, chipper trucks, stump grinders, aerial lifts, and other heavy and specialty equipment
    • Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues accurately and efficiently to minimize fleet downtime, using computer-based diagnostic tools and software, including Vermeer Diagnostics and Cummins INSITE
    • Conduct safety and compliance inspections on all fleet assets; identify and correct issues proactively before they result in equipment failure or safety risk
    • Perform pre- and post-repair test drives and equipment checks to verify repairs are complete and effective
    • Ensure all work meets applicable safety, environmental, and regulatory standards at all times
    • Operate company vehicles as needed to retrieve parts, transport equipment, or support fleet operations
  • Fleet Planning & Shop Standards
    • Take ownership of preventive maintenance schedules, repair priorities, and fleet readiness in coordination with the Director of Fleet & Facilities
    • Help build and improve fleet maintenance SOPs, inspection checklists, and shop processes; model and uphold them every day
    • Maintain accurate repair logs, maintenance records, and parts inventory in digital maintenance tracking systems, and use Samsara fleet data to monitor vehicle health and plan maintenance; coordinate parts procurement to minimize downtime
    • Keep the shop clean, organized, and safe, and set the example for how tools, equipment, and parts are cared for
    • Identify recurring equipment problems and recommend repair-versus-replace decisions, equipment improvements, and purchasing considerations
  • Team & Production Support
    • Communicate clearly with production leaders and crews about equipment status, repair timelines, and proper equipment care
    • Share knowledge and good habits with crew members and other shop staff, including showing them how to perform daily equipment checks and catch issues early
    • Step in calmly during breakdowns and urgent repairs to keep production moving
    • Identify and report facility maintenance needs or safety hazards to the Director of Fleet & Facilities promptly
    • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Required
    • 5+ years of professional experience as a diesel mechanic or heavy equipment technician
    • Strong, independent diagnostic skills across diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems
    • A track record of reliability, ownership, and high-quality work in a commercial or industrial shop
    • Proficiency with technology, including computer-based diagnostic and scan tools, OEM diagnostic software (such as Vermeer Diagnostics and Cummins INSITE), fleet management and telematics platforms (such as Samsara), and basic computer applications such as email and spreadsheets (Google Workspace or Microsoft Office); comfortable using tablets and smartphones and quick to learn new systems
    • Strong communication skills and the ability to work well with production crews, leadership, and vendors

    • Hands-on experience with Samsara, Vermeer Diagnostics, and/or Cummins INSITE
    • Experience helping set up or improve preventive maintenance programs, shop systems, or maintenance tracking software
    • Experience training, mentoring, or sharing knowledge with less experienced mechanics or equipment operators

Requirements and Skills:

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 lbs regularly (engine components, tires, equipment parts)
  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, squat, crouch, and bend for extended periods throughout the workday
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, including under vehicles on a creeper or lift
  • Ability to work overhead for extended periods when performing engine and equipment repairs
  • Manual dexterity and hand strength sufficient to operate hand and power tools safely and effectively
