Senior Front-End React Engineer

Summary

Build and maintain React-based frontend apps (Astro/Next.js) in a TypeScript microfrontend architecture for an ad-tech platform, collaborating with Kotlin backend teams and integrating AI tooling.

Senior Front-End React Engineer (Remote) – South Africa.

A well establish international software development company is looking for a Senior Front-End React Engineer to join their team on full time permanent basis.

This can be a fully remote position or hybrid with the option of going into their office in either Somerset West, Pretoria or Johannesburg only once a week.

Overview

We’re looking for a Senior Frontend Engineer with deep React expertise to join a team. The team owns one of the core revenue-generating products (serving and managing ads across the platform), spanning an end-user-facing frontend and an internal back-office application.

You’ll work in a modern TypeScript / microfrontend environment, collaborate closely with Kotlin backend engineers, and operate in a team that is actively integrating AI/agentic tooling into its everyday engineering workflow.

Requirements

  • Senior level – Minimum 5+ years with React and a track record of shipping and maintaining production frontend systems in a modern TypeScript environment.
  • Full-stack background is a plus but the centre of gravity is frontend.
  • Core tech stack (must-have):
    • TypeScript (primary language) and JavaScript
    • React – 5+ years’ hands-on experience (hard requirement)
    • Astro and/or Next.js
    • Build tooling: Vite / Webpack
    • Styling: Tailwind
    • Testing: Jest / Vitest (unit) and Cypress / Playwright (e2e/integration)
    • Microfrontend architecture, component reuse and testability
    • Git-based workflow with GitHub Actions CI/CD
  • Valued / nice-to-have:
    • Full-stack awareness and comfortable collaborating with Kotlin (or other JVM/typed backend) services; understanding of REST and clean integration between frontend and backend.
    • OpenAPI / Swagger – API documentation and, ideally, contract/code generation.
    • Observability & error monitoring: Sentry, Datadog, real-user monitoring (RUM) – understanding that remote logging beats local console.log.
    • Product analytics and experimentation: Google Analytics (event triggers, funnels, retention/drop off analysis) and A/B testing via feature flags and traffic splitting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain user-facing and internal frontend applications using React, TypeScript, Astro and Next.js within a microfrontend architecture optimised for component reuse and testability.
  • Write clean, well-structured, testable code and make sound architectural decisions around component design, separation of concerns, pure functions, dependency injection and state/data flow.
  • Make deliberate client-side vs server-side trade-offs – filtering, pagination and payload sizing – with an eye on performance at scale (millions of users/records).
