We're making guest stays feel magical again
Remember the last time a hotel genuinely surprised you? Not with a generic "Welcome!" but with something that made you think, "Wait, how did they know?"
That's what we're building at GuestButler. We're hyper-personalizing every guest's stay — at scale. Our tech helps leisure organizations move from transactional check-ins to experiences that feel like they were designed just for you. Proactive, predictive, personal.
We're processing thousands of personalized messages per week right now. By summer 2026, we'll hit one million weekly. We need someone who can help us scale this foundation while keeping the code clean and the system reliable.
What you'll actually be doing
You'll be building the engine that powers these personalized experiences. Think: intelligent automation systems that learn guest preferences, APIs that orchestrate communication across systems in our ecosystem, and interfaces that make complex personalization feel effortless.
This isn't maintenance work on legacy code. You're architecting new features, making architectural decisions, and directly shaping how thousands of guests experience hospitality. Your code will run in production serving real guests within weeks, not quarters.
You'll work alongside two other senior engineers and report to our lead engineer (who you'll meet during the interview process). Our CTO is hands‑on with architecture and direction but doesn't write production code, which means you get real autonomy to own your domain without micromanagement.
The non‑negotiables
- 10+ years building production software (not just writing code — shipping it)
- Deep expertise in Node.js, Next.js, and TypeScript.
- Fluent in English
- Dutch at B1/B2 level. You'll need to read and understand client feedback in Dutch — not write reports or lead client calls, just grasp what guests are saying
- Solid experience with HTTP APIs and webhooks. You know what good integration architecture looks like
- Strong communication skills. Just like a good prompt. Say what you mean so you get what you need.
- Hybrid office and remote work environment with at least one office day per week in Amsterdam.
Huge bonus points for:
- Experience with Genkit, React, or Firebase
- You’ve worked with WhatsApp Business API
- Google Cloud and Terraform knowledge (we run our infra there)
- Time spent at high‑growth SaaS companies, especially working on chatbot platforms (Intercom, Zendesk, Drift, Freshworks)
- Understanding of hospitality domain tech quirks and constraints
Our stack
Backend: Node.js, Next.js, TypeScript
Frontend: React
Infrastructure: Google Cloud, Firebase, Terraform
Integrations: REST APIs, webhooks, and whatever else gets the job done
Scale: Processing 1M+ personalized messages per week by 2026
What makes this role different
Autonomy with accountability. You own your domain. Everyone on the team is senior‑level, so there's no hand‑holding. You make technical decisions. You also own the outcomes.
Tight feedback loops. Ship code Monday, see it in production by Friday. No six‑month roadmaps gathering dust.
Meaningful product. Hospitality is broken in predictable ways. We're fixing it with software that actually improves how people experience travel. Whether they're staying at a boutique hotel in Amsterdam, a camping site in Zeeland, or a vacation park in the Veluwe.
Potential to join the founding team. We're building the foundation right now. If you prove your value and want to go deeper, we're open to discussing equity, co‑founder dynamics, or other structures beyond pure freelance. This is a chance to shape not just the code, but the company.
The practical bits
Commitment: 6‑month initial contract with strong intention to extend long‑term
Rate: €75–85/hour depending on experience
Structure: Freelance (ZZP) through a payroll company — zero cut from your rate, fully compliant with Dutch regulations
Hours: 32–40 hours/week
Location: Mondays on‑site in Amsterdam Bijlmer (for team sync, planning, bonding). Possibility to work remote the rest of the week
Start date: Ideally within 45 days, but we understand good people are booked out — let’s talk
What to expect:
- Week 1: Get familiar with our codebase. It's well‑structured and documented so you can ramp up quickly
- Week 2: Ship your first small features to production
- Month 1–3: Own meaningful features end‑to‑end
- Month 6+: If there's mutual fit, let’s talk about what comes next, whether that's extending as freelance or exploring founding team opportunities
The team you’ll join
You’ll work directly with our lead engineer (you’ll meet them during interviews) plus two other senior engineers. Everyone’s been around the block. We’ve all shipped production systems at scale, so code reviews are constructive and architectural discussions actually matter.
Our CTO sets technical direction and removes roadblocks but trusts the team to build. No drive‑by PRs or Sunday night "quick suggestions" that derail your week.
Mondays are when we come together: sprint planning, retros, technical discussions, and the occasional team lunch. The rest of the week you have deep work time.
Before you apply
A few things that’ll save us both time:
Apply directly via mail:
Use subject line: My Monday commute will involve: (your transport method + why it’s the best choice)
Be ready to start within 45 days (or tell us your availability)
No recruiters or agencies — we won’t respond
No employee applications — this is a freelance engagement
Applications without this exact subject format won’t be reviewed. Yes, we’re serious. Yes, this filters out bots and people who don’t read.
Ready?
We’re not looking for someone to fill a seat. We’re looking for someone who wants to build the foundation of something meaningful and potentially grow with us beyond the initial 6 months. xgiwjmb
