Senior Full Stack Engineer, Mobile & Web
Location: Remote, Germany or Portugal
About the role
MoneyGram is being refounded. Nearly half a million cash locations across 200+ countries, built over decades. Five times the footprint of McDonald's, Burger King and Starbucks combined. Over $150 billion moving through it a year. Nobody building crypto payments can buy that. Now we're wiring it into the rails money is moving onto. This past year: multi-chain, billions on chain, our own stablecoin, cash off-ramp for platforms like Kraken. Next is a stablecoin-powered balance account for millions of people worldwide. Most of the industry builds digital money for people who already have good banking. We're building it for everyone else.
You'd join the small team building it. Startup pace, decades of infrastructure underneath you.
What you'll do

Build features end to end. From the React Native screen a recipient taps to the Spring Boot service behind it. You'll own vertical slices, not layers.
Lead on mobile and web. The client experience is where this product lives or dies. We want someone whose frontend work is a genuine strength, not the half of the stack they tolerate.
Launch new markets, and make each one cheaper than the last. Every country brings its own regulatory, payout and localization requirements, and today each launch takes heavy manual work. You'll ship these launches, then build the tooling so the tenth doesn't cost as much as the first.
Work on the money path. Balances, ledgers, transfers, reconciliation. Getting this right when things fail halfway is the hard part of the job, and we treat it that way.
Integrate with systems you don't control. Payout partners, KYC vendors, card issuers, internal platforms in varying states of modernization. Designing sane contracts across messy boundaries is core to the work.
Invest in the platform. Automated testing, alerting, wallet recovery, KYC flows. We've deferred more of this than we'd like. You'll help us stop. Operate what you build. Deployment, monitoring, on-call, root cause analysis, with the autonomy and the responsibility that come with it.

What we're looking for

7+ years building and shipping production software, with real depth across the stack
Strong React and React Native. You've shipped and maintained a production mobile app, you're fluent in TypeScript, and you build interfaces that hold up on low-end devices and poor connections
Solid backend engineering in Java and Spring Boot, or comparable experience and the appetite to pick them up quickly
RESTful API design, relational data modeling, and familiarity with distributed systems failure modes
Automated testing and CI/CD as a default habit rather than a separate task
Comfort in and around legacy systems, refactoring incrementally alongside code you didn't write
Genuine interest in the product, not only the implementation. You ask who this is for and what happens after launch.
Ability to operate with limited direction in a small, fast-moving team
We'd rather hire someone with four of these and obvious range than someone who ticks every box and works in one lane. If you're close, apply.

Nice to have

Payments or fintech at scale: ledgering, reconciliation, KYC/AML, PCI, chargebacks
Crypto, stablecoins or blockchain payment rails, including wallet and custody infrastructure and smart contracts
Native iOS or Android alongside React Native

Our stack

React Native and React, TypeScript, Java and Spring Boot, PostgreSQL and Couchbase, Amazon EKS, OAuth 2.0 and JWT. You don't need all of it on day one.

How we work

Startup culture inside a global company. Small team, short path from idea to production, very little process for its own sake. Product decisions happen in conversation with engineers, not upstream of them. More influence than headcount alone would suggest, and less scaffolding than a large organization usually provides.
Remote from Germany or Portugal, with flexible hours. No relocation, no office expectation. You'll need the existing right to work in one of the two.
We work with teams on US East Coast time, five to six hours behind you. Your afternoons are the collaborative part of the day and your mornings are yours. We default to written communication and asynchronous decisions.
You'll own outcomes, not tickets. You'll instrument what you ship and care what the numbers say afterward. Cash-to-balance conversion is one of our biggest growth levers and needs someone who'll find where users drop off.
Greenfield and legacy, honestly. Some of this you'll build from nothing. Some is a decade old and carries real money. We won't pretend otherwise in the interview.

Timeline
We aim to move from first call to decision within 7 to 10 days, and we'll give you a clear answer either way.
