Qualifications

Required

• 5+ years of proven professional software engineering experience
• Demonstrated experience owning and operating production systems end-to-end while working independently in a hands-on capacity
• Strong commercial experience developing full-stack web applications using PHP, Laravel, and JavaScript
• Strong SQL skills with experience in data modeling, schema design, query optimization, indexing, data integrity, and database scalability
• Hands-on experience deploying and managing production applications across AWS and Azure, including monitoring, backups, and disaster recovery
• Practical knowledge of OWASP security principles, including access control, authentication, authorization, common web vulnerabilities, and secure engineering practices
• Proven ability to understand, stabilize, and improve complex, undocumented, or poorly handed-over legacy systems and codebases
• Experience implementing observability through structured logging, error-monitoring platforms, metrics, and tracing
• Experience with deterministic builds, dependency management, automated testing, CI/CD, and controlled release processes
• Ability to develop production-quality user interfaces using a modern JavaScript framework

Preferred

• Background in education-sector or student-focused platforms
• Knowledge of data migration, ETL, or reporting pipelines
• Proficiency in Python for data, analytics, or AI-related tooling
• Familiarity with containerized deployments using Docker and platform-as-a-service environments such as Azure App Service, AWS Elastic Beanstalk, or Railway
• Exposure to agentic coding tools, AI-assisted software development workflows, or Model Context Protocol (MCP)
• Availability to work with substantial overlap during Sydney business hours (AEST/AEDT)

Responsibilities

• Own the architecture, maintenance, reliability, and continuous improvement roadmap for the Laravel/PHP and MySQL production platform
• Manage database architecture, data models, schema design, query performance, indexing, capacity planning, and overall database health
• Oversee cloud operations across AWS and Azure, including deployments, monitoring, backups, disaster recovery, operational readiness, and participation in the on-call rotation
• Lead application security by managing access control, authentication, authorization, vulnerability prevention, and regular security reviews for platforms handling sensitive student data
• Implement observability through structured logging, error-monitoring platforms such as Sentry, metrics, and tracing to accelerate root-cause analysis
• Establish disciplined release processes through reproducible builds, pinned dependencies, committed lockfiles, automated testing, CI/CD, and staged deployments
• Develop backend services, system integrations, and user-facing features using modern JavaScript frameworks when required
• Improve legacy systems by reducing technical debt, modernizing undocumented code, and creating clear technical documentation
• Collaborate with the Sydney-based technical lead on platform architecture, engineering standards, product priorities, data initiatives, and AI integrations
