Summary
Senior Highway Designer plans and leads complex roadway projects for NJDOT and NJTA, using MicroStation and OpenRoads to deliver safe, sustainable infrastructure while mentoring junior staff.
As GFT continues to grow and expand, we are seeking a Highway Designer to support our Transportation group in our East Brunswick office. This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring regular attendance at our East Brunswick.

As a Highway Designer, you’ll support roadway engineering efforts on transportation projects for NJDOT, NJTA, and other area agencies. You’ll perform design assignments for smaller projects or selected portions of larger projects, applying standard engineering design techniques and procedures. You’ll exercise independent judgment in completing assignments, prepare plans and technical documents, coordinate with project team members, and support the delivery of quality transportation infrastructure projects.
In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
- Perform roadway design assignments for small projects or selected portions of larger transportation projects
- Develop roadway design plans using established design criteria, standards, and procedures
- Coordinate design activities with bridge, transit, environmental, geotechnical, and civil/site disciplines as needed
- Prepare engineering plans, specifications, estimates, and supporting documentation, including roadway geometry, grading, drainage, and maintenance and protection of traffic
- Review design calculations, plans, and technical documents for accuracy and completeness
- Apply independent judgment when evaluating and selecting standard design techniques and procedures
- Support project engineers and project managers with technical assignments and project coordination
- Assist with the preparation of project submittals and permitting documentation
- Coordinate with clients and agencies on assigned project tasks
- Assist with tracking task schedules, deliverables, and project progress
- Participate in project meetings and communicate design information to project team members
What you'll bring to our firm:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
- 1+ years of highway and roadway design experience with increasing responsibility
- Proficiency in MicroStation, OpenRoads, and Microsoft Office
- NJDOT or NJTA design experience
- Strong highway and roadway design skills with experience applying standard design techniques and procedures
- Ability to exercise independent judgment in completing design assignments of moderate complexity
- Experience supporting project coordination and working as part of a multidisciplinary project team
- Experience preparing design submittals and coordinating with permitting agencies
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
What we prefer you bring:
- EIT or PE license in New Jersey or ability to obtain through reciprocity within one year
- Experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D
- Experience working on projects for New Jersey transportation clients
Compensation:
The range for this position is salary range is $80,000-$90,000. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
