Senior Infrastructure Engineer
Summary
Senior hands-on infrastructure engineer (internally titled Platform Engineering Lead) at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, acting as senior technical authority over architecture and standards across Cisco networking, Windows Server, Azure, Active Directory/Entra ID and Microsoft 365, including resilience, backup/DR and event-driven infrastructure.
Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (GCCEC) is looking for an experienced Senior Infrastructure Engineer with strong skills across Cisco networking and Microsoft enterprise technologies.
This is a senior, hands-on technical role with responsibility for infrastructure architecture, engineering standards and the ongoing development of our technology environment.
You'll work across enterprise networks, servers, cloud platforms, identity and security systems, while helping shape the future direction of infrastructure at GCCEC.
Unlike many traditional enterprise IT environments, our infrastructure must also support a busy calendar of conferences, exhibitions and major public events, each with different technical requirements.
Please note that the position title for this role is known as Platform Engineering Lead internally.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
Working closely with the IT Manager and our service operations teams, you'll be the senior technical authority for GCCEC's infrastructure environment.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Designing, implementing and improving our Cisco network infrastructure, including routing, switching, wireless and network security
- Engineering and maintaining Microsoft infrastructure, including Windows Server, Azure, Active Directory, Entra ID and Microsoft 365
- Leading infrastructure architecture, technical design and engineering standards across our on-premises and cloud environments
- Managing infrastructure resilience, capacity, backup, disaster recovery and the underlying data centre and network environment
- Providing senior technical expertise for complex incidents, infrastructure changes and major technology projects
- Mentoring other IT team members, improving technical documentation and building a more consistent, supportable technology environment
- An important part of this role is helping us modernise and standardise our infrastructure, reducing technical risk and making our systems easier to manage, maintain and support.
You'll have the opportunity to influence technology decisions, contribute to infrastructure strategy and lead the engineering work needed to turn those decisions into reality.
ABOUT YOU
We're looking for an experienced infrastructure engineer who enjoys hands-on technical work but is equally comfortable thinking about architecture, design and long-term technology direction.
Your core technical experience will include:
- Strong experience with enterprise Cisco networking, including routing, switching and wireless
- Solid engineering experience across Microsoft technologies, particularly Windows Server, Azure, Active Directory and Microsoft 365
- Experience designing, implementing and supporting enterprise infrastructure with a focus on security, reliability and performance
- Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to resolve complex infrastructure issues
- The ability to document technical solutions, establish standards and share knowledge with colleagues
Additional experience that would be highly regarded includes:
- Microsoft Azure Local and hybrid cloud environments
- Palo Alto Networks firewalls and security technologies
- Microsoft Entra ID and enterprise endpoint management
- Enterprise backup, recovery and disaster recovery solutions
- Data centre infrastructure, including structured cabling, power and cooling systems
- Relevant Cisco, Microsoft or other professional certifications
You don't need to have worked with every technology in our environment. We're most interested in someone with a strong engineering foundation, sound technical judgement and the ability to learn and adapt.
Just as importantly, you'll be someone who takes ownership, communicates clearly and understands the value of documentation, knowledge sharing and good engineering practices.
A technology environment that's a little different
At GCCEC, infrastructure engineering is about more than keeping corporate systems running.
Our technology supports everything from everyday business operations through to major conferences, exhibitions and public events attracting thousands of visitors.
That means working across conventional enterprise IT, complex networking, data centre infrastructure and the integration points between IT and professional audiovisual systems.
Our systems need to be reliable and secure, but also flexible enough to accommodate rapidly changing event requirements.
It's a varied technical environment where you'll encounter interesting engineering challenges and see the operational impact of your work.
WHY JOIN GCCEC?
We're continuing to invest in our technology environment, with a focus on resilience, cybersecurity, infrastructure modernisation and better engineering practices.
As our Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you'll have a genuine opportunity to influence technical decisions and help establish the standards and architecture that will guide our infrastructure over the coming years.
You'll work with a small, collaborative IT team where your expertise will be valued, your contribution will be visible and you'll have the opportunity to work across a much broader technology environment than many conventional infrastructure roles.
If you're an experienced engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, designing better systems and taking technical ownership, we'd love to hear from you.
