Senior IT Software Engineer – Scala, Akka & Java Microservices

About the Role

We are an IT & professional services consultancy partnering with enterprise clients across regulated industries. We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer with deep expertise in Scala, Akka, and Java to build platform notification services that enable large industrial/enterprise customers to receive critical alerts for efficiently operating complex equipment and machinery. This is a 12-month W2 contract engagement, fully remote.

What You'll Do

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable notification and event-driven microservices using Scala and Akka technologies (Streams, Actors, HTTP, Persistence).

• Work independently on complex application and infrastructure components used across one or more systems.

• Drive application development focused on delivering high-value business features.

• Architect and implement high-availability, reliable solutions at scale.

• Design well-defined RESTful APIs using Spring Boot.

• Deploy and maintain software using CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Azure DevOps, Jenkins) and AWS cloud services (API Gateway, ALB, NLB, Fargate, Lambda, S3, CloudWatch, IAM, CloudFormation).

• Work with relational and NoSQL databases including PostgreSQL and AWS DynamoDB.

• Mentor and provide technical guidance to less senior engineers.

• Establish good engineering practices and maintain high standards of software quality within the team.

• Identify areas for team growth and improvement; guide structured code development, documentation, and user guides.

• Communicate effectively with end users and internal stakeholders on complex technical problems.

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Bachelor's degree with 10+ years of experience, or Master's degree with 8+ years of experience.

• 5+ years of software development experience using Java 8+.

• 2+ years of Scala programming experience.

• 2+ years of hands-on experience with Akka technologies (Streams, Actors, HTTP, Persistence).

• Solid Computer Science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, and system design.

Nice to Have:

• Experience designing Spring Boot RESTful APIs.

• Familiarity with application architectural patterns: MVC, Microservices, Event-driven, etc.

• Experience deploying and maintaining software on AWS at scale.

• Proficiency with CI/CD tooling (Azure DevOps, Jenkins, or similar).

• Experience with PostgreSQL and/or AWS DynamoDB.

• Agile/Scrum working experience.

• Demonstrated leadership on small-to-medium scale projects with strategic impact.

• Passion for technology and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.

Compensation & Benefits

• Rate: $80/hr on W2

• Contract Duration: 12 months
