Senior Java Backend Engineer
Job Overview
Praia is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to take on a high-impact role with significant autonomy. In this role, you will establish deep, end-to-end architectural ownership of our platform, primarily driving high-performance Java backend services (80–90% of the focus) while supporting client-side integrations and platform needs in JavaScript (10–20%).
This senior-level scope pairs you closely with engineering leadership to deliver resilient software at a steady, well-defined pace. You will ensure the delivery of secure, well-documented APIs used by internal teams and external health system partners. If you thrive on building scalable distributed services, collaborating on light front-end touchpoints, and tackling complex enterprise integrations, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
- Backend & System Design: Architect, build, and scale core Java backend services powering Praia's consumer experience and platform ecosystem.
- Client-Side Platform Support: Collaborate on the frontend by developing and maintaining JavaScript components, UI workflows, and client-side integration hooks (10–20% of scope).
- Healthcare Interoperability: Build and operate enterprise integration services for EMRs (Epic/MyChart and others) utilizing HL7 FHIR APIs and modern interoperability patterns.
- Data Pipelines & Analytics (Nice to Have): Leverage Databricks and Apache Spark to build or support data pipelines, workflows, and analytical workloads when integration needs arise.
- Security & API Excellence: Develop and maintain secure REST/event-driven APIs featuring robust authentication/authorization (OAuth2/OIDC), auditing, and least-privilege controls. Author clear developer documentation, OpenAPI specs, and runbooks.
- DevOps & Operational Reliability: Champion a modern DevOps mindset by owning CI/CD pipelines, automated testing (unit/integration/E2E), infrastructure-as-code, structured logging, and incident response.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner directly with Product, Design, and partner-facing teams to translate technical requirements into robust, frictionless solutions.
Qualifications
- Experience: 6+ years of experience building and operating production software, with demonstrated senior-level scope and clear ownership of distributed, high-throughput systems.
- Backend Expertise: Expert-level software development skills in Java and the modern Java ecosystem (Quarkus or Spring Boot, concurrency, microservices).
- Client-Side Capabilities: Strong working knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript and modern client-side architectures, comfortable owning light frontend integrations and UI-facing platform touchpoints.
- Healthcare / Regulated Domain: Practical experience integrating with EMR/EHR systems and healthcare interoperability standards (FHIR, HL7, SMART on FHIR); equivalent background in heavily regulated sectors like FinTech is also valued.
- Data Engineering (Plus): Prior exposure to or hands-on experience with Databricks, Apache Spark, or distributed data processing is a plus, but not required.
- Cloud & Infrastructure: Experience delivering cloud-native services (AWS, Azure, or GCP), container orchestration (Kubernetes/Docker), and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
- Security Focus: Deep understanding of OAuth2, OIDC, mTLS, JWT, secrets management, and secure SDLC practices.
- Observability: Hands-on experience with modern observability tooling (metrics, distributed tracing, APM, log aggregation) and operational triage.
- Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; proven ability to write crisp technical design documents and articulate architecture trade-offs.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
