We are seeking Senior Java Developers to join a digital engineering team supporting DWP Universal Credit.

This is a hands-on senior role requiring strong experience with Java, Spring Boot, AWS, Kafka and MongoDB. You will develop scalable and resilient services, provide technical leadership, and mentor junior developers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test and maintain high-quality Java applications and services.
  • Take ownership of complex technical solutions and system integrations.
  • Provide technical leadership, coaching and mentoring to other developers.
  • Contribute to architecture, technical strategy and engineering best practice.
  • Review code and system designs to ensure quality and appropriate standards.
  • Support application and infrastructure issues, including 3rd-line support where required.
  • Contribute to integration, automated testing, CI/CD and production support.
  • Promote security, resilience, accessibility and operational stability.
  • Collaborate with architects, product teams and wider engineering communities.
  • Identify risks and drive continuous improvement.

Essential Skills

  • Extensive commercial Java experience.
  • Strong Spring Boot experience.
  • Practical AWS experience.
  • Apache Kafka and event-driven architecture.
  • MongoDB / NoSQL databases.
  • REST APIs and microservices.
  • Automated testing, TDD/BDD and CI/CD.
  • Production troubleshooting and monitoring.
  • Strong Agile experience.

Senior-Level Requirements

Candidates must be able to hit the ground running, take ownership of complex technical challenges and contribute to architectural decisions.

You should have experience:

  • Leading technical discussions and code reviews.
  • Mentoring and supporting junior developers.
  • Designing scalable, resilient services.
  • Working across multidisciplinary Agile teams.
  • Balancing technical quality, security, performance and user needs.
  • Sharing knowledge and promoting engineering best practice.

User & Service Focus

You should understand user needs and be able to collaborate with product and user research teams to ensure solutions are accessible, effective and aligned with customer requirements.
