Senior Java developer joining a team that supports and extends an existing live product (two seats available in Pretoria or Somerset West). Day-to-day work spans building new functionality, refactoring, performance and high-availability tuning, root-cause debugging, and mentoring, using Java 8+/17, Java EE, JPA/Hibernate, Maven, Git, Jenkins, and ReactJS.

This is a senior Java seat on a liveproduct, not a greenfield build. The system is already in production. New workhas to fit what is there, and a change that looks fine in isolation can breaksomething three modules away. You will know the domain, work with the analysts,and ship changes that do not take the product down.
Two roles are open, in Pretoria orSomerset West. You will sit in a development team, not as a lone contractor.Mentoring is part of the job, both ways: you follow the standards that alreadywork, and you help other developers when their change does not.
What you will do:
- Supportthe existing product and build new functionality and components on top ofit.
- Work withbusiness analysts to understand the domain and turn new requirements intosomething that can actually be built.
- Refactorand improve the code so the product stays maintainable when the nextrequirement lands.
- Evaluateand improve performance and high-availability behaviour, not only featuredelivery.
- Write unitand integrated system tests that show the change works as intended.
- Doroot-cause analysis on bugs in an integrated system, including debuggingother people’s code and fixing test data when that is what is broken.
- Build anddeploy on an application server, then incorporate other developers’ workand get the system running again after the merge.
Requirements
What you need:
- A relevanttertiary qualification in Engineering or Computer Science, or matric plusthe experience below.
- 8–10 yearsin a software development environment, of which at least 5 years as asenior developer in a team.
- StrongJava. Java 8 and above is required. Java 17 is preferred.
- Java EEserver-side development, JPA/Hibernate, and an application server orcontainer. Karaf is preferred.
- Maven, Gitand Jenkins. SQL and a relational database. Apache Derby is relevant.
- ReactJS,Bootstrap, CSS3 and HTML5, plus REST or SOAP.
- A workingknowledge of the SDLC as it applies to a software team, not only as adiagram.
- Youdeliver production-quality software: attention to detail, your own unittests, and support through the quality testing phase.
