Senior Java Software Engineer

At ING Hubs Türkiye, we're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer (Java) who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges, driving technical decisions, and building scalable systems that serve millions of customers across ING's international ecosystem.

This is more than a backend development role. You'll help shape platform direction, contribute to architectural decisions, support a large-scale cloud transformation journey, and guide engineering excellence within your team.

Role Summary

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will play a key role in defining and evolving the technical vision of our platform together with Domain Architects and Chapter Leads.

You'll work on modern Java-based backend systems, cloud migration initiatives, distributed architectures, messaging platforms, and API-driven ecosystems while helping the team adopt best practices in software engineering, observability, and operational excellence.

The platform you help shape doesn't stay local — it integrates with systems used across ING's European retail banking footprint, meaning the architectural decisions you make in Istanbul can create impact well beyond our office.

Work Model

Our hybrid way of working is designed to balance collaboration, innovation, and personal flexibility. Team members typically come together at our Vadistanbul office for two days per week during three weeks of the month, while one week each month is fully remote.

We also offer additional flexibility during the summer period, with remote working opportunities throughout August, allowing colleagues to spend more time where they feel most productive while staying connected to their teams.

As part of a globally distributed organization, you'll collaborate with colleagues across multiple ING locations while contributing to solutions that create impact across the bank.

Minimum Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional Java development experience
• Experience designing, developing, and maintaining highly available and resilient applications
• Strong hands‑on experience with Java 8, 11, 17 and/or 21
• Experience with Git and Maven
• Experience with Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Data JPA and JDBC
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern software delivery practices
• Experience with unit and integration testing
• Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs
• Experience with SOA and Event-Driven Architecture principles
• Experience with monitoring and observability solutions such as Prometheus, Grafana and Elasticsearch
• Experience working with Docker, Kubernetes and/or OpenShift
• Strong understanding of secure coding principles and software quality practices

You'll play a direct role in our migration to Azure-based cloud infrastructure — a live modernization initiative that is actively reshaping how we build, deploy, and operate our platform.

This isn't theoretical cloud experience. You'll contribute to architectural decisions, engineering standards, automation approaches, and platform evolution while helping modernize production systems.

Messaging & Distributed Systems

We are looking for engineers who enjoy distributed systems and event-driven architectures.

Hands‑on experience with Kafka is highly valuable as event-driven integration plays an important role in our modernization journey. Familiarity with enterprise messaging solutions such as EMS, ActiveMQ, or IBM MQ is also beneficial, as parts of our current ecosystem continue to interact with these technologies.
