Overview

As the Senior Manager of Software Engineering for Order Management Platform, you will lead the engineering team responsible for Scout's system of record for customer vehicle orders and the orchestration platform that manages order state transitions throughout the vehicle purchasing and delivery journey.
You will be responsible for the engineering strategy, execution, reliability, scalability, and operational excellence of the Order Management Platform while building and developing a high-performing team of software engineers. Working closely with Product Management, Finance, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Retail Operations, Customer Experience, and Enterprise Systems teams, you will deliver critical capabilities that power Scout's direct-to-consumer business model and support a world-class customer purchasing experience.
This role combines people leadership, technical ownership, strategic planning, and delivery accountability for one of the most business-critical domains within Scout's digital ecosystem. The role aligns with Scout's engineering leadership structure, bridging team-level execution and broader domain ownership.
What you’ll do

Team Leadership
- Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team of software engineers responsible for the Order Management platform.
- Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Drive hiring, onboarding, career development, performance management, and succession planning activities.
- Mentor senior engineers and help develop future technical and organizational leaders.
- Partner with Staff Engineers to raise the overall technical maturity and effectiveness of the team.
Domain Ownership
- Own engineering execution and operational excellence for Scout's Order Management Platform.
- Drive the evolution of the platform responsible for managing order lifecycle events and order state transitions from reservation through vehicle delivery.
- Ensure seamless integration between Order Management Platform and key business systems including CRM, Payment, Finance, ERP, Manufacturing, Inventory, Logistics, Delivery, and Customer Experience platforms.
- Balance delivery of business capabilities with long-term investments in platform scalability, reliability, maintainability, and operational efficiency.
- Lead engineering efforts supporting:
- Order creation and management
- Vehicle configuration and change management
- Pricing and incentives
- Financing and leasing integrations
- Vehicle allocation
- Production readiness
- Fulfillment and delivery preparation
- Customer order status and communications
Technical Leadership
- Partner closely with Staff Engineers and architects to define the technical direction and long-term roadmap of the Order Management Platform.
- Drive engineering best practices across architecture, code quality, testing, CI/CD, observability, security, and operational readiness.
- Participate in architecture reviews and key technical decision-making processes.
- Ensure systems are designed for scalability, resiliency, performance, and maintainability.
- Influence platform modernization initiatives and technical investment decisions.
- Drive the application of AI and intelligent automation capabilities within the Order Management domain to reduce manual processes, improve order accuracy, accelerate issue resolution, and enhance customer and employee experiences.
- Evaluate emerging AI technologies and partner with Product, Architecture, and Data teams to incorporate high-value AI capabilities into Order Management Platform workflows, operational processes, customer communications, and platform strategy.
Product Delivery & Execution
- Partner with Product Management to translate business objectives into technical solutions and execution plans.
- Drive predictable delivery of roadmap commitments through effective planning, risk management, dependency coordination, and execution oversight.
- Align engineering priorities with business goals while balancing short-term delivery and long-term platform sustainability.
- Communicate progress, risks, tradeoffs, and technical recommendations to leadership and stakeholders.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Product, Finance, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Retail Operations, Customer Experience, and IT teams.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives spanning multiple business domains and enterprise systems.
- Build strong partnerships with vendors, enterprise teams, and external technology partners where required.
- Help drive alignment across teams to deliver end-to-end customer and business outcomes.
Operational Excellence
- Establish and track operational metrics for system availability, reliability, performance, and service health.
- Own production readiness, incident management, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement processes.
- Ensure engineering teams maintain operational ownership and accountability for production systems.
- Drive automation, monitoring, alerting, and observability best practices.
- Establish service-level objectives and reliability standards for critical order processing workflows.
Location & Travel Expectations:
- This role will be based out of the Scout Motors location in Fremont, California.
- This role requires regular attendance in the office, with regular in-person meetings and events.
- Applicants should expect that the role will require the ability to convene with Scout colleagues in person and travel to participate in events on behalf of the company from time to time.

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical discipline.
- 10+ years of software engineering experience.
- 3+ years of engineering management experience leading software engineering teams.
- Proven experience leading software engineering teams delivering customer-facing or business-critical platforms.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, APIs, cloud-native architectures, event-driven systems, and modern software engineering practices.
- Experience leading complex cross-functional initiatives across multiple stakeholders and business functions.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational leadership skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build, develop, and retain high-performing engineering teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building and operating Order Management, Commerce, ERP, Supply Chain, Fulfillment, Manufacturing, or Logistics platforms.
- Experience supporting direct-to-consumer digital commerce experiences.
- Experience integrating with enterprise systems, financial platforms, and third-party technology providers.
- Familiarity with AI-powered applications, intelligent automation, and data-driven operational platforms.
- Experience with AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, event-driven architectures, and modern DevOps practices.
- Automotive, retail, e-commerce, or fintech industry experience.

Pay Transparency
This is a full-time, exempt position eligible to receive a base salary and to participate in an annual performance bonus program. Final salary offered will be determined based on factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills and experience. The annual performance bonus program is preset and not candidate dependent.
Initial base salary range = $180,000.00 - $220,000.00
Initial California base salary range= $198,000 - $242,000
