Impact Summary:
The Senior Mechanical CAD Designer will support the design, development, and integration of aircraft modifications and prototype systems through advanced 3D mechanical modeling and detailed engineering drawing development. Working with a high degree of independence, this position will create and modify complex parts, assemblies, structural attachments, brackets, and equipment mounting solutions using industry-standard CAD software. The role requires strong mechanical design capabilities, proficiency in GD&T, and the ability to translate engineering requirements into accurate, manufacturable designs while supporting aircraft installation, structural analysis, and configuration management activities.
Responsibilities:
- Independently create and modify complex 3D CAD models of mechanical components, assemblies, brackets, structural attachments, equipment mounts, and aircraft installation hardware using Creo, SolidWorks, or CATIA.
- Produce detailed 2D engineering drawings from 3D models, including dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, parts lists, assembly details, and manufacturing and installation requirements.
- Develop mechanical design solutions for aircraft modifications and prototype installations, accounting for structural interfaces, equipment clearances, accessibility, manufacturability, and installation constraints.
- Apply ASME Y14.x drawing standards and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure accurate, functional, and releasable engineering documentation.
- Collaborate with engineers, structural analysts, manufacturing personnel, and installation teams to resolve design challenges, verify fit and clearance, and incorporate engineering changes into Configuration Management (CM) controlled CAD models and drawings.
- Independently plan and perform complex mechanical design assignments within established engineering guidance, translating technical requirements and aircraft modification concepts into complete 3D models and releasable engineering drawings.
- Maintain consistency between 3D models, 2D drawings, model-based dimensions, and annotations; incorporate engineering redlines and maintain accurate revision histories throughout the design lifecycle.
- Interpret aircraft wiring diagrams and harness schematics to develop mechanical cable routing solutions and 2D installation drawings, including cable supports, clips, straps, penetrations, grommets, strain relief, and separation from adjacent aircraft systems.
- Research and interpret aircraft technical data, original equipment manufacturer documentation, and approved naval aviation repositories to establish accurate design baselines and support aircraft modification modeling.
- Manage CAD models, engineering drawings, and supporting documentation within designated Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems, including check-in/check-out, revisions, configuration baselines, lifecycle status, and engineering change documentation.
- Develop accurate mechanical geometry, fastener patterns, and structural attachment details to support engineering review and structural substantiation, considering load paths, shear, tension, bearing, edge distance, pitch, and gage.
- Support aircraft fit checks, installation evaluations, and technical reviews by verifying modeled designs against physical aircraft constraints, documenting discrepancies, incorporating installation feedback, and providing technical guidance and drawing reviews to junior personnel.
Competencies:
- Advanced Mechanical CAD Modeling: Independently develops complex 3D parts, assemblies, and aircraft installation models, applying mechanical design principles, geometric relationships, and manufacturability considerations.
- Engineering Drawing Precision: Applies ASME Y14.x standards and GD&T to produce accurate, functional engineering drawings, including appropriate datum structures, dimensions, tolerances, and manufacturing specifications.
- Aircraft Integration and Technical Judgment: Translates engineering requirements and aircraft modification constraints into practical mechanical design solutions while recognizing structural, installation, and technical issues requiring engineering review.
- Digital Design and Configuration Management: Maintains consistency between 3D models, 2D drawings, model-based annotations, and supporting technical data while ensuring accurate revisions, configuration control, and traceability.
- Technical Problem-Solving and Collaboration: Resolves mechanical design and installation challenges through effective coordination with engineers, structural analysts, manufacturing personnel, quality inspectors, and aircraft installation teams.
- Independent Execution and Technical Mentorship: Manages complex design assignments with minimal supervision, delivers technically complete work, and provides constructive technical guidance and drawing reviews to less experienced personnel
