Description

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Birmingham City Centre / Jewellery Quarter

Salary: £45,000–£52,000

Working pattern: Hybrid and flexible working

Employment: Permanent, full-time

An employee-owned building services and sustainability consultancy is looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join its growing Birmingham team.

The business works across commercial, industrial, healthcare, residential, retail, care and mixed-use developments, delivering mechanical, electrical, energy and sustainability services. As an employee-owned consultancy, everyone has a genuine stake in the business and its continued growth.

This is a senior position offering responsibility for your own projects, direct client contact and the opportunity to support the development of junior engineers.

The role

You’ll lead the mechanical design delivery of projects from initial concept through to construction, working across the relevant RIBA stages.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing HVAC, LTHW, chilled-water and ventilation systems
  • Producing calculations, specifications, schedules and technical reports
  • Working alongside the in-house CAD team to produce coordinated drawings
  • Developing low-carbon and energy-efficient mechanical solutions
  • Managing your own projects, programmes and deliverables
  • Attending client and design-team meetings
  • Coordinating with architects, contractors and other engineering disciplines
  • Undertaking site monitoring and witnessing duties
  • Supporting and mentoring junior engineers and technicians
  • Ensuring designs meet Building Regulations, British Standards and CIBSE guidance

Your experience

You should have:

  • Strong mechanical building services design experience within a consultancy
  • A relevant mechanical or building services engineering qualification
  • Experience delivering projects through multiple RIBA stages
  • A good understanding of HVAC, LTHW, chilled-water and ventilation systems
  • Experience using mechanical design, calculation and modelling software
  • Familiarity with IES or similar building performance software
  • An understanding of CAD and BIM workflows
  • Strong client-facing and project-management skills
  • A full UK driving licence

Chartered status, progress towards Chartership, healthcare and HTM experience, or CIBSE Low Carbon Consultant/Energy Assessor accreditation would be beneficial but is not essential.

What’s on offer

  • Salary of £45,000–£52,000
  • Hybrid and flexible working
  • Early finishes on Fridays
  • Generous annual leave
  • Christmas office closure without using annual leave
  • Defined career progression pathways
  • Support towards professional qualifications and Chartership
  • Contributory pension
  • Electric vehicle salary-sacrifice scheme
  • Cycle-to-work scheme
  • Death-in-service benefit
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Paid volunteering leave

This would suit an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer looking for more influence over projects and a clear route to progress within a growing, employee-owned consultancy.
