Job Purpose
Based in the Design & EngineeringDepartment, the Senior Mechanical Engineer is a highly experienced technicalspecialist responsible for delivering high-quality mechanical engineeringdesigns, technical calculations, and detailed drawing packages for assignednew-build vessel projects. The role is dedicated to technical execution,ensuring that project specifications, client requirements, and classificationsociety rules are translated into compliant, reliable, and fully detailedengineering solutions throughout the design and construction phases.
Key Responsibilities
- Mechanical Design & Technical Calculations: Calculate, size, and develop comprehensive mechanical design packages for assigned projects, including vessel’s piping schematic diagrams and equipment selection.
- Technical Documentation & Drafting: Prepare detailed technical specifications, design philosophy documents, purchase specifications, equipment list schedules, and engineering calculation reports.
- Class & Regulatory Deliverables: Develop and compile mechanical drawing packages for Classification Society submission. Incorporate surveyor comments and update design documentation to secure approval.
- Procurement & Technical Evaluation: Perform technical evaluations for all mechanical equipment (main engines, generators, pumps and other marine equipment), evaluate vendor technical submittals, and ensure vendor data aligns with vessel design requirements.
- Design Coordination & Reporting: Participate in technical clarification meetings with clients, class surveyors, and equipment vendors alongside the Principal Engineer. Prepare and submit regular technical status updates and progress reports to the Principal Engineer.
- Inter-Disciplinary Alignment: Coordinate with Naval Architects, Electrical Engineers, and Structural Designers to resolve local space, weight, pipe routing, and physical layout interfaces.
- Production & Yard Support: Respond to Request for Information from the shipyard, provide technical clarifications for site queries, and update production/as-built drawings during the construction, testing, and sea trials phases.
Requirements
Education
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
Language & Communication
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and spoken, to prepare technical reports, review technical documentation, and participate in project discussions with internal and external stakeholders.
Experience & Technical Competencies
- At least 5 years of relevant experience in mechanical engineering design within the marine, shipbuilding, or offshore engineering industry.
- Experience in carrying out mechanical design calculations, preparing engineering drawings, and selecting equipment for marine new-build projects.
- Familiarity with applicable marine engineering standards, classification society requirements, and industry best practices.
- Experience in the design of high-speed craft, aluminum vessels, naval or patrol craft, and commercial vessels will be an advantage.
- Experience in the design and integration of hybrid marine propulsion systems will be an advantage.
