JOB DESCRIPTION FOR SENIOR PAYROLL OFFICER
We are seeking an experienced Senior Payroll Officer to take ownership of payroll processing and help ensure employees are paid accurately, efficiently and on time.
This role is suited to a payroll professional who is genuinely operating at a senior level and brings strong, hands-on experience using Astute Payroll. You will be expected to confidently manage payroll activities with a high degree of independence, applying your existing payroll knowledge and experience without requiring significant training in payroll processing.
As a Senior Payroll Officer:
You will play a key role in delivering accurate and timely payroll services while maintaining a high standard of compliance, confidentiality and attention to detail.
You will be comfortable taking ownership of your workload, resolving payroll queries and discrepancies, and working independently to ensure payroll deadlines are consistently met.
Strong hands-on experience with Astute Payroll is essential for this position. Previous experience using Bullhorn would be beneficial but is not required, as training can be provided.
Your Responsibilities as a Senior Payroll Officer would be:
• Manage end-to-end payroll processing accurately and within required deadlines.
• Use Astute Payroll confidently as part of day-to-day payroll operations.
• Review and validate payroll data before processing and finalisation.
• Process employee payroll changes, adjustments, deductions and other payroll-related transactions.
• Investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies, errors and employee queries promptly.
• Maintain accurate employee payroll records and documentation.
• Ensure payroll activities are completed in accordance with relevant Australian legislation, awards, agreements and organisational requirements.
• Assist with payroll reconciliations, reporting and other payroll administration as required.
• Maintain strict confidentiality when handling employee and payroll information.
• Identify payroll issues proactively and take ownership of resolving them. Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders while being capable of managing payroll responsibilities independently.
• Support continuous improvement of payroll processes and procedures.
What We're Looking For:
• Minimum 5 years of payroll experience, ideally within an Australian company or an international organisation supporting the Australian market
• Demonstrated experience operating at a Senior Payroll Officer level or in a comparable senior payroll position.
• Strong, hands-on Astute Payroll experience – essential.
• Demonstrated end-to-end payroll processing experience within an Australian payroll environment.
• Strong working knowledge of Australian payroll requirements and relevant employment legislation.
• Ability to independently manage payroll activities with minimal supervision.
• Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
• Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to meet strict payroll deadlines.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
• Confidence investigating and resolving complex payroll queries and discrepancies.
• Professional communication skills and the ability to work effectively with employees and internal stakeholders.
• High standards of discretion, integrity and confidentiality.
• Previous Bullhorn experience would be advantageous but is not essential. Training can be provided.
