Build it. Improve it. Own it.Are you a hands-on Platform Engineer who knows AWS and Kubernetes inside out?
We're looking for an experienced Platform Engineer to take ownership of a modern AWS cloud platform, building and evolving the infrastructure that enables engineering teams to develop, deploy and deliver software faster and more reliably.
This is not simply a role maintaining existing infrastructure or deploying applications into Kubernetes. We're looking for someone who understands the platform from the ground up, can manage its entire lifecycle and isn't afraid to get hands-on with complex infrastructure challenges.
You'll play a key role in evolving the platform, driving automation, improving reliability and ensuring the underlying technology is secure, scalable and ready for what comes next.
If you enjoy solving complex engineering problems, taking ownership and finding smarter ways to do things, this could be a great opportunity.
What you'll be doingYou'll be at the heart of the engineering environment, working across AWS infrastructure, Kubernetes, automation and CI/CD.
Own and evolve the AWS platform
- Design, build and operate core AWS infrastructure, ensuring it's resilient, secure and scalable.
- Take ownership of production AWS EKS clusters throughout their lifecycle.
- Plan and execute regular Kubernetes and EKS version upgrades, ensuring clusters remain secure, supported and up to date.
- Manage control plane upgrades, worker node groups, AMIs and Kubernetes add-ons.
- Ensure cluster upgrades and infrastructure changes are delivered with minimal disruption to running workloads.
- Manage and optimise Kubernetes clusters, including workload scheduling, networking, autoscaling and high availability.
- Work with Docker, Helm and container orchestration technologies to support modern application delivery.
- Implement and maintain autoscaling solutions using HPA, Cluster Autoscaler, Karpenter or similar technologies.
- Troubleshoot complex distributed systems and resolve platform-level issues.
- Continuously improve cluster reliability, performance and operational maturity.
- Build, provision and manage AWS infrastructure using Terraform.
- Maintain Infrastructure as Code, managing configuration, dependencies, state and infrastructure changes.
- Automate repetitive operational tasks and reduce manual intervention.
- Drive consistency and standardisation across environments.
- Own and optimise CI/CD pipelines, with a strong emphasis on Jenkins.
- Develop and maintain declarative and scripted pipelines, shared libraries and pipeline governance.
- Work with GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Bitbucket Pipelines and other delivery tooling.
- Implement continuous delivery and GitOps practices using tools such as Argo CD or Flux.
- Improve developer experience through self-service tooling, automation and standardisation.
- Implement monitoring, observability, alerting and proactive capacity management.
- Embed DevSecOps practices across build, deployment and runtime environments.
- Manage secrets, access controls and security standards.
- Lead platform upgrades, migrations and architectural improvements.
- Work closely with engineering, security and architecture teams to continuously improve the platform.
There are three particularly important areas of experience we're looking for:
1. AWS EKS – End-to-end cluster management
You must have strong, hands-on experience operating production AWS EKS environments.
We're particularly interested in people who have personally planned and executed EKS/Kubernetes cluster upgrades, rather than simply working alongside teams responsible for them.
You should understand the complete upgrade lifecycle, including:
- Kubernetes control plane version upgrades.
- Managed node group and worker node upgrades.
- AMI compatibility and node replacement strategies.
- Kubernetes add-on upgrades, including CoreDNS, kube-proxy and VPC CNI.
- Workload compatibility, pod disruption budgets and maintaining application availability.
- Post-upgrade validation, troubleshooting and recovery planning.
2. Terraform – Infrastructure as Code
Strong, practical Terraform experience is essential.
You'll need to be comfortable building, provisioning and managing AWS infrastructure through code, including EKS-related resources.
We want someone who understands infrastructure dependencies, state management, configuration changes and how Terraform fits into the broader platform lifecycle.
3. Jenkins – CI/CD engineering
Deep, hands-on Jenkins experience is important.
You'll ideally have experience designing, building and maintaining sophisticated pipelines, shared libraries, pipeline governance and Jenkins administration and scaling.
Beyond these three core areas, you'll also bring:
- Strong AWS experience across VPC, IAM, EC2, EKS, load balancing and autoscaling.
- Excellent Kubernetes and Docker knowledge.
- Experience with Helm and containerised application deployments.
- Exposure to GitOps and tools such as Argo CD or Flux.
- Knowledge of autoscaling technologies including HPA, Cluster Autoscaler and Karpenter.
- Understanding of DevOps and DevSecOps principles.
- Experience with secrets management solutions such as AWS Secrets Manager or HashiCorp Vault.
- Knowledge of monitoring and observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Dynatrace or OpenTelemetry.
- Strong Linux fundamentals and distributed systems troubleshooting skills.
- Experience with service mesh technologies such as Istio, Linkerd or Consul.
- Exposure to multi-cluster or multi-region Kubernetes platforms.
- Experience with AWS cost optimisation and performance tuning.
- Experience working in compliance-driven or regulated environments.
You'll be someone who:
- Takes ownership and understands the importance of platform reliability.
- Is genuinely hands-on and enjoys working at the infrastructure level.
- Can independently plan and execute complex technical changes.
- Understands the consequences of infrastructure changes and takes a considered approach to risk.
- Enjoys troubleshooting and getting to the root cause of problems.
- Challenges existing processes and looks for better ways to work.
- Communicates effectively with engineers, architects and other stakeholders.
- Is constantly looking to improve their technical knowledge and capabilities.
This is an opportunity to take real ownership of a production cloud platform, work with modern technologies and help shape the infrastructure that enables great software engineering.
If you know your way around EKS, Terraform and Jenkins – and can demonstrate that you've operated and upgraded production platforms yourself – let's talk.
