Senior Platform Engineer

Summary

Hands-on Senior Platform Engineer (70% project, 30% BAU) managing VMware vSphere/NSX, enterprise storage, backup/DR, and Kubernetes across a multi-datacentre environment for a large Australian organisation.

Salary: $125,000 – $155,000 per year

We’re partnering with a large, established Australian organisation looking to add a Senior Platform Engineer to its enterprise infrastructure team.

This is a hands-on senior engineering position working across a large, multi-datacentre environment, with a strong focus on VMware vSphere, NSX, storage, backup and disaster recovery.

The role offers a good balance of keeping critical enterprise platforms running while also being heavily involved in projects, platform optimisation, datacentre consolidation and the organisation's future infrastructure strategy.

The Role

Working as part of an experienced Platform team, you’ll be responsible for the design, implementation, optimisation and ongoing operation of enterprise infrastructure across multiple datacentres.

Approximately 70% of the role will be project-focused, with the remaining 30% covering BAU, operational support and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Design, build and support enterprise VMware vSphere environments

  • Manage and optimise VMware NSX, including micro-segmentation and software-defined networking

  • Support enterprise storage platforms including Dell EMC, NetApp and/or Pure Storage

  • Manage backup and recovery infrastructure, ideally Veeam

  • Contribute to upcoming datacentre consolidation and workload migration projects

  • Design, maintain and test Disaster Recovery solutions

  • Identify opportunities to improve platform performance, resilience and efficiency

  • Support the adoption of Kubernetes/container technologies within the VMware ecosystem

  • Contribute ideas around cloud migration, automation, Infrastructure as Code and platform modernisation

  • Provide technical recommendations and documentation

  • Work closely with internal technology teams, vendors and external service providers

  • Participate in an on-call rotation approximately one month every 3–4 months

What We're Looking For

You’ll be an experienced Infrastructure or Platform Engineer who has worked hands-on within a complex enterprise environment.

Ideally, you'll bring:

  • 5+ years' hands-on infrastructure/platform engineering experience

  • Strong VMware vSphere design, implementation and administration experience

  • Hands-on VMware NSX experience

  • Experience with NSX micro-segmentation and software-defined networking

  • A VMware certification

  • Strong understanding of enterprise datacentre environments

  • Experience with enterprise storage technologies such as Dell EMC, NetApp or Pure Storage

  • Experience with Veeam or another enterprise backup platform

  • Experience designing or supporting Disaster Recovery environments

  • Strong Windows Server administration experience

  • Exposure to datacentre or workload migration projects

  • Experience with Kubernetes or containerisation in an enterprise environment

  • Exposure to Azure and/or AWS

  • An understanding of automation and Infrastructure as Code practices

Experience with SQL Server HA/clustering, ITIL practices, lifecycle management and broader networking technologies would also be advantageous.

What Will Make You Successful?

Technical capability is important, but we're also looking for someone who takes genuine ownership and responsibility for their platforms.

You'll be able to communicate clearly and concisely, work effectively with other technical teams and take a proactive approach to improving the environment rather than simply maintaining the status quo.

This organisation is looking for someone who can bring new ideas and modern infrastructure thinking to the team – helping determine what should be optimised, automated, containerised or potentially migrated to cloud over time.

The Opportunity

  • Permanent position

  • $125k–$135k + super (ideally)

  • Melbourne (preferably) or Sydney

  • Enterprise, multi-datacentre environment

  • Significant upcoming infrastructure and datacentre projects

  • Approximately 70% project work / 30% BAU

  • Established platform team

  • Opportunity to influence the future direction of the infrastructure environment

  • Large, stable Australian organisation

This is a 5-day onsite position, so please ensure this working arrangement suits you before applying.

Requires Australian PR or Citizenship, & applicants must be located in Australia. No sponsorship on offer.

If you're a VMware-focused Senior Infrastructure or Platform Engineer looking for an environment where you can combine deep enterprise infrastructure experience with modernisation and transformation work, we'd be keen to hear from you.
