Senior Platform Engineer - Scale-up technology company within the automotive industry

  • $170k - $190k including super, + bonus
  • Fully remote within Australia
  • PR/Citizenship required

About the Role

Senior Platform Engineer to take ownership of the reliability, performance and health of the production environment for an automotive technology company that has been growing quickly over the past few years. Over half the business are Engineers!

This is a key hire for the business. As the platform continues to scale and larger clients come onboard, we need someone who can keep the engine running, identify problems before they become incidents, and lead a fast, coordinated response when something does go wrong.

You will become the first person on top of production issues, bringing together the right people, setting up the right monitoring and alerts, managing communication, and driving problems through to permanent resolution.

They're looking for some of the best Platform Engineers in Australia. That bar is set deliberately high.

To test this, we use Talenfy - https://talenfy.au/candidate/Wkv7sPaz - from this, you can book an interview call straight away, as well as get feedback on your suitability.

What You’ll Own

  • Production reliability, infrastructure health and platform performance
  • Rapid response to production incidents, including coordinating technical teams and stakeholder communication
  • Proactive monitoring, alerting, capacity planning and identification of future scaling issues
  • AWS infrastructure, with a strong focus on security, reliability and performance
  • Database performance and troubleshooting, particularly PostgreSQL
  • Root-cause analysis and implementation of permanent fixes
  • Improving observability, operational runbooks and incident-management processes
  • CI/CD and infrastructure automation
  • Planning for the future migration from Heroku towards AWS-native infrastructure
  • Contributing to infrastructure, security, compliance and broader technical leadership decisions

Over the first 12 months, the goal is to establish a mature Platform / DevOps / SRE capability that gives the engineering team and customers confidence in the resilience and scalability of the platform.

What We’re Looking For

**Must have**

  • Exceptional communication skills, particularly during high-pressure incidents
  • A proactive mindset. You notice problems, take ownership and act without waiting to be told
  • Strong hands-on AWS experience
  • Demonstrated DevOps, platform engineering and/or SRE experience.
  • Excellent production incident management experience
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure security
  • Experience diagnosing performance and scaling issues in production systems
  • Strong SQL database knowledge, ideally PostgreSQL, including bottlenecks, indexing and query performance
  • Experience implementing monitoring, alerting and observability
  • Understanding of infrastructure-as-code and modern infrastructure practices
  • Experience with, or a strong understanding of, migrating workloads from PaaS environments such as Heroku into AWS

We are particularly interested in people who have worked in small to medium-sized companies where they have had genuine ownership.

**Nice to Have**

  • Heroku experience
  • Kubernetes
  • AWS Lambda
  • Ruby
  • Cloudflare
  • GitHub Actions
  • Security or compliance experience
  • Relevant AWS, security or infrastructure certifications

Ruby experience is not essential but you will need to pick some of it up.

Who we need

This role suits someone who enjoys being the glue holding a technical environment together.

You do not need to personally solve every problem, but you need to recognise what is happening, know who needs to be involved, coordinate the response and make sure the issue gets properly resolved.

The environment is broad and not completely defined today, so you will need to be comfortable stepping into ambiguity, understanding what exists, identifying gaps and progressively improving it. For example, a future migration to a full AWS environment.

About the company

Relaxed, non-corporate culture with very little hierarchy or internal politics. People work collaboratively and there is significant freedom to shape your role and progress your career. Remote working too!

As the business grows, there is scope to move into technical leadership, build a team, take ownership of additional areas, or develop deeper expertise in platform, infrastructure or security.

The company actively supports professional development and pays for relevant certifications.
