Posted Updated
Discussion

Summary

Senior hands-on platform engineer owning a heavily VMware-based enterprise estate (vSphere/ESXi/vCenter, networking, SAN/NAS, backup/DR) at a well-established Australian organisation: ~70% project work such as upgrades, migrations and hybrid-cloud initiatives, ~30% BAU support, fully onsite in South Melbourne.

Salary: $130,000 – $145,000 + Super

Melbourne CBD / South Melbourne | Permanent | Full-time onsite
Sydney candidates also welcome to apply

Highlights

  • Senior hands-on VMware / infrastructure role with major platform modernisation work ahead

  • Broad exposure across virtualisation, datacentre, storage, DR, cloud and automation

  • Join a small, experienced platform team where you can genuinely influence technical direction

We’re partnering with a well-established Australian organisation looking to add a Senior Platform Engineer to its infrastructure team.

This is a hands-on senior engineering role for someone with a strong background in VMware and enterprise infrastructure who enjoys owning complex environments, solving difficult problems and improving how platforms are designed and operated.

The environment is heavily VMware-based today, with a number of significant infrastructure, datacentre and modernisation initiatives ahead.

While experience across the full technology stack would be ideal, we’re not looking for someone who ticks every box. If you have deep VMware experience and a strong background across enterprise infrastructure, we’d still like to hear from you.

The role

You’ll work across a mix of project delivery and operational engineering, with approximately 70% of your time focused on projects, upgrades and improvements and 30% on BAU/platform support.

You’ll be involved in areas including:

  • Supporting and improving enterprise VMware vSphere / ESXi / vCenter environments

  • Managing clusters, HA, DRS, vMotion, lifecycle upgrades and performance

  • VMware networking including vSphere Distributed Switches, distributed port groups, VLANs and virtual networking

  • NSX / NSX-T where applicable, including segmentation and virtual networking

  • Datacentre infrastructure, compute, storage and SAN/NAS environments

  • Backup, replication and disaster recovery platforms

  • Infrastructure migrations, upgrades and datacentre consolidation

  • Cloud and hybrid-cloud initiatives across AWS and/or Azure

  • Automation and Infrastructure as Code where appropriate

  • Capacity planning, monitoring, vulnerability remediation and platform optimisation

  • Working with security, application, networking and infrastructure teams

  • Taking ownership of complex platform issues and recommending longer-term improvements

There will also be participation in an on-call rotation, approximately one week every 3–4 months, with an additional on-call allowance, on top of the offered salary.

What we’re looking for

The most important thing is a strong foundation in enterprise VMware infrastructure.

Ideally, you’ll bring:

  • Strong hands-on experience with VMware vSphere, ESXi and vCenter

  • Experience supporting medium-to-large enterprise or multi-datacentre environments

  • Good understanding of HA, DRS, vMotion, cluster management, patching and upgrades

  • Solid VMware networking experience, ideally with vSphere Distributed Switches

  • Experience with enterprise backup, replication and disaster recovery

  • Exposure to SAN/NAS/storage technologies

  • Strong troubleshooting skills across compute, virtualisation, networking and storage

  • Experience taking ownership of infrastructure projects or platform improvements

  • Ability to communicate clearly with both technical teams and stakeholders

Highly regarded, but not essential

Any of the following would be valuable, but we’re not expecting one person to have everything:

  • NSX / NSX-T

  • Micro-segmentation or other SDN/segmentation technologies

  • VMware Cloud Foundation

  • Veeam, Commvault, Zerto, SRM or similar

  • AWS or Azure migration experience

  • PowerShell / PowerCLI

  • Terraform or Ansible

  • Kubernetes, Tanzu, AKS or EKS

  • PCI DSS, Essential Eight or other regulated/security-focused environments

  • VMware certifications

If you haven’t worked directly with NSX, that won’t automatically rule you out. Strong experience with VMware Distributed Switches, enterprise networking, segmentation or similar technologies can be equally relevant.

Location

The preference is for someone based in Melbourne, working from the South Melbourne office five days per week.

We are also open to strong candidates based in Sydney, working on site from the Sydney CBD office.

Why consider it?

This is a good opportunity for someone who wants to remain technically hands-on while taking on more ownership and influence.

You’ll be joining a relatively small platform team, meaning you won’t be restricted to one narrow area of infrastructure. There’s genuine scope to work across VMware, datacentre, DR, storage, cloud and automation while helping shape how the environment evolves over the coming years.

If your background is predominantly VMware/infrastructure and you don’t tick every technology listed above, we’d still encourage you to apply.
