Senior Portfolio Manager - Investment Innovation & Capability

As a Senior Portfolio Manager - Investment Innovation and Capability, you'll lead the strategy, development and adoption of AI, machine learning and advanced analytics capabilities across our Investments business. You'll be responsible for translating innovation into practical, scalable solutions that enhance investment decision-making, improve operational efficiency and support long-term portfolio outcomes.
Working within the Defensive and Liquid Assets and Portfolio Intelligence team, you'll lead a multidisciplinary team and drive two critical mandates: building production-grade AI and analytics capabilities, and uplifting AI literacy, adoption and responsible use across the broader investment function. From emerging technologies and alternative data through to predictive analytics and agentic workflows, you'll play a key role in shaping how investment professionals leverage technology to deliver better outcomes.
You'll partner closely with investment, technology and business stakeholders to embed innovative solutions into day-to-day investment processes, establish best practices and frameworks, and position Australian Retirement Trust at the forefront of AI-enabled investment capability.
This role is a permanent opportunity and is based in Brisbane or Sydney.
Day to day, you'll:
- Lead and execute the strategy for investment innovation across AI, machine learning and advanced analytics.
- Drive the development and application of AI/ML techniques including NLP, predictive analytics, knowledge graphs and alternative data solutions.
- Design and implement agentic and automated workflows that enable faster and more scalable investment decision-making.
- Partner with stakeholders to embed machine-assisted research, analytics and decision-support tools across portfolio management activities.
- Oversee predictive analytics and insight generation capabilities that support portfolio monitoring and investment opportunities.
- Identify and evaluate new technologies, data sources and innovation opportunities that enhance investment capability.
- Establish standards, frameworks and best practices for AI, machine learning, analytics and model development.
- Lead, coach and develop a high-performing multidisciplinary team focused on innovation, experimentation and continuous improvement.
- Design and deliver AI capability uplift programs that build practical skills in AI tools, prompt design and data-driven decision-making.
- Influence senior leaders through thought leadership, innovation and strategic stakeholder engagement.

- You bring extensive experience in investments, quantitative research or advanced analytics within asset management or financial services.
- Your understanding of financial markets, asset classes and investment processes is highly developed.
- You'll have strong expertise in AI, machine learning, predictive modelling, NLP or alternative data applications.
- You're experienced in designing and delivering AI or data capability uplift programs across diverse stakeholder groups.
- You demonstrate advanced programming capability in Python or comparable data science technologies.
- Your track record includes translating analytical insights and innovation into scalable production-ready solutions.
- You'll be confident influencing senior investment leaders and navigating complex stakeholder environments.
- You're experienced in leading teams and delivering strategic initiatives within large or complex organisations.
- You possess the communication skills to translate technical concepts into compelling investment insights.
- Your experience with cloud platforms, analytics environments and emerging AI technologies will be highly regarded.
- You'll have an appreciation of responsible AI principles, governance frameworks and model risk considerations.
