Senior Primary Design Engineer in Northampton, West Northamptonshire
We are seeking an experienced Senior Primary Design Engineer to lead and deliver high-quality primary engineering designs for HV substations and power infrastructure projects. Working for the specialist power engineering arm of a FTSE 250 company, you will play a key role in technical delivery, mentoring junior engineers, and working closely with project managers, clients, and multidisciplinary teams.
This role is available on a hybrid or remote basis, offering flexibility while remaining closely connected to project teams and clients.
Key Responsibilities:

Lead the design and development of primary engineering solutions for HV substations and associated infrastructure

Produce and review primary design deliverables including layouts, GA drawings, equipment specifications, and technical reports
*
Ensure designs comply with relevant standards, client specifications, and safety requirements
*
Provide technical guidance, checking, and mentoring to junior engineers
*
Interface with clients, contractors, and internal stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle
*
Support project planning, cost estimates, and risk assessment
*
Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes and standards
About You:
*
Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
*
Significant experience in primary design within HV substations (e.g. 33kV–400kV)
*
Strong knowledge of UK / international standards and utility requirements
*
Proven ability to lead design tasks and review the work of others
*
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
*
Chartered or working towards Chartered Engineer status (desirable)
