Why is this role important?

As a Senior Product Designer, Loblaw Advance, you’ll help shape the next generation of products used by advertisers, agencies, and internal teams to plan, activate, understand, and optimize their businesses with Loblaw.

You’ll work across an increasingly connected portfolio of experiences spanning media, audiences, measurement, analytics, and AI-powered workflows. As these products evolve, we’re moving beyond traditional software experiences toward more intelligent, agentic products that help users understand complex information, make better decisions, and accomplish work more efficiently.

Reporting to the Director of Product Design, you’ll partner closely with Product, Engineering, Data, AI, Business, and other designers to take complex product problems from Discovery through delivery and optimization.

You’ll bring strong Product Design craft, systems thinking, and product judgment while using AI as a natural part of both your design practice and the experiences you create.

You won’t simply execute requirements. You’ll help determine what problems are worth solving, bring a clear Design point of view to product decisions, and create experiences that are intuitive, scalable, and connected across the broader Advance ecosystem.

What you’ll do

  • Problem Discovery, Definition & Goal Setting: You’ll work closely with Product, Engineering, Business, Data, and customers to understand complex problems before jumping into solutions. You’ll facilitate Discovery sessions and workshops, synthesize multiple inputs, challenge assumptions, and help teams align around clearly defined problems, hypotheses, outcomes, and measures of success.
  • AI-Native Product Design: You’ll help rethink how traditional product workflows evolve when AI and agents become part of the experience. You’ll explore conversational and generative interfaces, recommendations, automation, human-in-the-loop interactions, transparency, controls, and other emerging AI patterns while ensuring users remain informed and in control.
  • AI-Fluent Design Practice: AI is part of your design toolkit. You’ll use emerging tools to accelerate research synthesis, prototyping, exploration, content generation, analysis, and other parts of the Product Design process. You’ll experiment continuously while applying strong judgment, product taste, and Design craft to determine where AI improves the work—and where it doesn’t.
  • Interaction Design: You understand when and why to apply different interaction design approaches. You’ll turn complex workflows, data, and business rules into intuitive experiences through information architecture, journey maps, service blueprints, user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and detailed interaction design.
  • Art Direction & Visual Design: You’ll create polished, high-fidelity experiences with a strong understanding of hierarchy, typography, spacing, responsive behavior, interaction states, and visual storytelling. You know when pixel-level detail matters and when speed and experimentation matter more.
  • Design Systems Thinking: You’ll design beyond individual screens. You’ll leverage and evolve existing components and patterns, identify inconsistencies and gaps, and propose scalable solutions. As our products become increasingly AI-native, you’ll also help identify emerging interaction patterns that can be reused across the Advance portfolio.
  • Design Research, Validation & Iteration: You’ll contribute to and lead generative and evaluative research, customer conversations, competitive assessments, usability testing, and experimentation. You’ll synthesize qualitative and quantitative inputs into recommendations that help teams make better product decisions.
  • Product & Business Thinking: You’ll connect Design decisions to customer needs, product strategy, business priorities, and measurable outcomes. You’ll work with Product, Analytics, and Business partners to understand how success is measured and use those signals to inform prioritization and iteration.
  • Cross-Functional Product Leadership: You’ll be a trusted partner to Product and Engineering, bringing recommendations rather than waiting for requirements. You’ll articulate trade-offs, challenge assumptions constructively, communicate risks early, and help teams navigate ambiguity toward strong decisions.
  • Craft & Team Contribution: As a Senior designer, your impact extends beyond your own projects. You’ll participate actively in critiques, share knowledge and emerging practices, provide thoughtful feedback to other designers, and help raise the quality of Product Design across Advance.
  • Inclusive Design: You’ll ensure our products can be experienced by everyone, reflecting the diversity of the communities we serve. You’ll apply AODA requirements and inclusive design principles throughout Discovery, design, and delivery.

Does this sound like you?

The Product Thinker: You care deeply about Design, but you don’t see Design as the end goal. You want to understand the customer problem, business opportunity, technical constraints, and measures of success before determining the right solution. You naturally ask not only “How should we design this?” but “Should we build this, and why?”

The AI-Native Explorer: You’re genuinely curious about how AI is changing both products and the practice of Product Design. You experiment with new tools, prototype emerging interaction models, and continuously learn. You’re excited about AI without being distracted by novelty—you apply judgment to determine where it creates meaningful customer value.

The Systems Thinker: You naturally connect the dots. You think beyond individual screens and features to understand journeys, workflows, systems, and relationships across products. You look for patterns that can be reused and decisions that can scale.

The Candid Collaborator: You provide clear and direct feedback that helps your partners and teammates improve. You’re comfortable navigating disagreement and ambiguity, communicate with candour and empathy, and build strong relationships across Design, Product, Engineering, and Business.

The Critical Thinker: You ask thoughtful questions, challenge assumptions, seek evidence, and explore multiple possibilities before converging. You’re comfortable saying “I don’t know yet” and know how to create a path toward an answer.

The Craft Advocate: You care deeply about the details that make products intuitive and polished. You understand interaction design, visual hierarchy, responsive behavior, accessibility, components, and Design Systems—and you know how to balance that quality bar with the realities of shipping products.

The Storyteller: You can take complex information and turn it into a narrative that helps people understand the problem, the evidence, the trade-offs, and your recommendation. You adapt your communication to designers, engineers, Product partners, Business stakeholders, and senior leaders.

The Owner: You don’t wait for someone else to create clarity. When requirements are incomplete, priorities shift, or the path forward is ambiguous, you proactively bring people together, identify what needs to be answered, and move the work forward.

The Continuous Learner: You actively own your development. You seek feedback, learn from other disciplines, stay current with emerging technology and Design practices, and continuously add new tools to your Product Design toolbox.

Your qualifications should include

  • 5+ years of experience working as a Product Designer on cross-functional teams delivering consumer experiences, enterprise products, SaaS platforms, or similarly complex digital products.
  • A portfolio with recent case studies demonstrating end-to-end Product Design ownership from Discovery and problem framing through delivery, validation, and iteration.
  • Strong interaction and visual design craft, with experience shipping polished, accessible, responsive, and scalable digital experiences.
  • Experience working closely with Product and Engineering in an agile product development environment.
  • Strong understanding of Design Systems, including reusable components, patterns, variants, tokens, responsive behavior, and scalable product architecture.
  • Experience navigating ambiguous problem spaces and independently developing recommendations based on customer, business, and technical considerations.
  • Experience conducting or partnering on customer research, competitive analysis, usability testing, and other Discovery and validation activities.
  • Experience using qualitative and quantitative evidence to inform Design decisions and define measures of success.
  • Strong storytelling and presentation skills, with experience communicating complex product problems and recommendations to cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated contribution to a broader Design practice through critiques, mentorship, knowledge sharing, Design Systems, culture, or improvements to ways of working.
  • Curiosity and hands-on experience using AI-enabled tools within your Product Design workflow.
  • Experience exploring AI-powered, conversational, agentic, automation, or decision-support experiences is an asset.
  • Experience with Retail Media, AdTech, MarTech, analytics, advertising platforms, enterprise workflows, or similarly complex B2B products is an asset.

Show us examples of:

  • A complex or ambiguous problem you helped define before designing the solution.
  • How research, customer insights, analytics, or other evidence influenced your decisions.
  • The alternatives and trade-offs you considered and why you ultimately recommended a particular direction.
  • How you partnered with Product and Engineering to move from idea to shipped experience.
  • How you used Design Systems or created reusable patterns rather than solving only for an individual feature.
  • How you defined success and what you learned after launch.
  • How you've incorporated AI into your Design practice or explored AI-powered product experiences.
  • How your work made your team, Design practice, or other designers better.
