Senior Project Engineer, Commissioning
CMTA, formerly known as AMA Group, is hiring a Senior Project Engineer, Commissioning, who will be responsible for performing building and systems commissioning work on a range of both small and large projects. This is a hands-on role that will give the opportunity to lead projects and represent CMTA in all interactions with clients, contractors, architects, and other project team members. In this role, the Project Engineer will receive guidance and mentorship from the commissioning group leader and will be trained to become a Project Manager.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform commissioning of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire protection, and building automation systems by reviewing design documents and conducting field inspections and functional testing to verify conformance with the owner's project requirements (OPR), basis of design (BOD), codes, and standards
Develop and maintain commissioning documentation, including commissioning plans, pre-functional checklists, functional performance test scripts, issues logs, and final commissioning reports
Support LEED Commissioning (Fundamental and Enhanced) and Monitoring-Based Commissioning (MBCx) requirements on applicable projects
Conduct site observations and system testing throughout design, construction, and warranty phases, and document findings with clear recommendations
Perform energy audits and write reports identifying opportunities to optimize building operations and system performance
Prepare technical drawings, spreadsheets, checklists, and data visualizations to support commissioning findings and reports
Read and interpret mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and controls drawings, specifications, and sequences of operation, including the ability to review and mark up P&IDs and control diagrams
Travel locally to project sites throughout the NYC metro area, with occasional regional travel as needed
Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
Desired Skills and Experience:
4–7 years of experience in commissioning, MEP design, or building systems engineering
Working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and building automation/controls systems in commercial or institutional buildings
Experience developing or executing commissioning documentation such as commissioning plans (CxP), pre-functional checklists (PFC), functional performance tests (FPT), and issues logs
Ability to read, interpret, and mark up P&IDs, one-line diagrams, and control sequences
Comfortable working in active construction environments and coordinating directly with contractors and trades
CxA, CPMP, or EIT credential a plus; LEED AP with Commissioning specialty a plus
Strong written communication skills for producing clear, client-ready reports
Base Salary Range: $95,000 - $110,000. This role is also eligible for an annual performance‑based bonus. Bonus eligibility and payout are determined by role, individual performance, and company performance, and are not guaranteed.
