Senior Research Analyst – Japan Financials, Research
Summary
Senior equity research analyst leading coverage of Japanese financial institutions (banks, insurance, securities, fintech) — responsible for financial modeling, stock recommendations, thematic reports, and institutional client engagement in Tokyo.
Key Areas of Responsibilities
The Japan Financials franchise will operate as a team-based research platform consisting of the Senior Research Analyst and one or more Research Associates.
While the Senior Research Analyst has ultimate responsibility for research quality, stock recommendations and client relationships, coverage objectives are defined at the team level rather than the individual level.
The analyst will be responsible for building and managing research coverage across the Japanese financial sector, including:
- Megabanks
- Regional banks
- Trust banks
- Insurance companies
- Securities companies and brokers
- Exchanges and market infrastructure providers
- Leasing companies
- Consumer finance companies
- Fintech and financial software companies
Coverage may include companies such as Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Mizuho Financial Group, Resona Holdings, Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Holdings, Tokio Marine, MS&AD, SOMPO, Nomura Holdings, Daiwa Securities, Japan Exchange Group, ORIX, SBI Holdings, Mitsubishi HC Capital and selected fintech companies. The long-term objective is for the Japan Financials team to develop comprehensive coverage across all major financial subsectors and become one of the leading financials research platforms in Japan.
Research Product Development
- Develop and maintain a high-quality research product across the Japanese financial sector.
- Produce thematic reports, company initiations, earnings reviews, valuation updates and actionable stock ideas.
- Deliver differentiated insights based on proprietary analysis, financial modelling and industry expertise.
- Ensure all covered companies have robust financial models and valuation frameworks.
- Maintain a quarterly research production schedule covering reports, company meetings and client events.
Stock Selection and Investment Ideas
- Generate timely and differentiated investment recommendations.
- Develop medium and long-term views on industry trends, regulation, interest rates, capital allocation, governance reforms and structural changes within the sector.
- Publish research that provides clear investment conclusions and identifies earnings and valuation catalysts.
- Contribute proactively to market discussions and client debates.
Client Engagement
- Build strong relationships with institutional investors globally.
- Regularly communicate investment views through meetings, calls, conferences and roadshows.
- Work closely with sales teams to maximize the commercial impact of research.
- Provide exceptional client service and maintain frequent contact with key accounts.
- Support corporate access initiatives and investor events.
Commercial Contribution
- Contribute to commission generation, client votes and market share growth.
- Help expand CLSA's client base within the financials sector.
- Support opportunities arising from block trades, capital markets activity and investment banking engagement where appropriate.
- Collaborate with macro, strategy and regional research teams to maximize the value of the research franchise.
Team Leadership
- Act as the leader of the Japan Financials research franchise.
- Foster a collaborative and high-performance team culture.
- Ensure consistency between company-level views and broader sector and macro themes.
- Work closely with other Japan and regional sector analysts to identify cross-sector opportunities.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or above in business related discipline, preferably with finance and/or account major.
- Minimum 12 years of relevant experience in a similar to relevant role.
- Significant experience covering Japanese financial institutions.
- Deep knowledge of banking, insurance, securities, leasing, consumer finance or fintech sectors.
- Strong financial modelling and valuation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to generate differentiated and commercially actionable research.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in a client-facing environment.
- Strong relationship-building and business development capabilities.
- Proven mentoring, team leadership and talent development experience.
- CFA, CMA or equivalent professional qualifications preferred.
- Excellent command of / fluent in both spoken and written Japanese and English
