Senior Rust Software Engineer

Discussion

Summary

Senior backend engineer building and improving business-critical, distributed systems in Rust on-site in Zürich. Day to day: designing architecture, writing well-tested production Rust (Tokio/Serde/Actix, Docker/Kubernetes), and collaborating with engineers and stakeholders. Fluent German is a firm requirement.

What is this role about?

In simple terms, you will be building and improving backend software in Rust for complex, business-critical systems.

You will work on systems that need to be stable, secure and able to handle a lot of activity, so this is not a basic application development role. You will be involved in designing the software, writing the code, testing it properly and helping decide how the overall system should be built.

The role is a good fit for someone who enjoys technical problem-solving, backend development, distributed systems and writing high-quality Rust code.

You will work closely with other experienced engineers and technical stakeholders, so strong communication skills are important.

Fluent German is a firm requirement for this position.

Unfortunately, candidates without strong German language skills cannot be considered for this role.

What you will be doing

  • Design, develop and maintain software applications using Rust
  • Work on complex backend and distributed systems
  • Build reliable, scalable and maintainable software solutions
  • Contribute to software architecture and technical design decisions
  • Write clean, well-tested and production-ready code
  • Work with modern development, testing and deployment practices
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, architects and other technical stakeholders
  • Support continuous improvements across software development processes

What we are looking for

  • At least 5 years of professional software development experience
  • At least 2 years of hands-on commercial Rust experience
  • Strong understanding of core Rust concepts, including:

    • Ownership
    • Borrowing
    • Lifetimes
    • Async/Await
  • Experience with Rust libraries or frameworks such as Tokio, Serde, Actix, or similar
  • Experience working with distributed or event-driven systems
  • Good understanding of software architecture and design principles
  • Experience with automated testing and modern software engineering practices
  • Experience with technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes
  • Comfortable working within Agile development environments
  • Experience working on complex or business-critical systems

Language requirements

  • German: Strong professional fluency is mandatory
  • English: Strong professional fluency

Nice to have

Experience in any of the following would be advantageous:

  • Financial services or regulated environments
  • Large-scale enterprise software
  • Cloud environments
  • CI/CD pipelines
  • Linux environments
  • Distributed systems
  • Microservices
  • SAFe or similar scaled Agile environments

The ideal profile

You are an experienced software engineer who enjoys solving technically challenging problems rather than simply building standard applications.

You have genuine hands-on Rust experience, understand how Rust works beyond basic syntax, and are comfortable discussing topics such as ownership, memory safety, concurrency and asynchronous programming.

You are also comfortable working in an environment where software quality, reliability and maintainability are important.
