OnTap Data | Cremorne, Melbourne (Hybrid) | Full-time | Reporting to the Chief Product Officer
Love working with data? Excited by AI-driven development? Want real ownership in a small team where your work shows up in products used by some of Australia's biggest liquor brands? Read on.
About OnTap Data
OnTap Data is a Melbourne-based technology company powering smarter decisions for the Australian liquor and retail industry. With more than 25 years of experience, we build purpose-built software that helps suppliers, retailers and wholesalers aggregate, report on and act on their sales data. Our clients include some of Australia's largest liquor brands and retail groups, including Bacardi, Pernod Ricard and Suntory.
We're a small, high-impact team, which means your work genuinely matters from day one.
The Role
We're looking for a curious, self-driven Senior Software Engineer to play a hands-on role in building, improving and modernising the technology behind our data products. This isn't a role where you'll be writing boilerplate code to a spec. You'll work across our stack, get stuck into real problems and help shape how our platforms evolve.
You'll enjoy working with data, be comfortable picking up new tools and technologies, and thrive when you're given ownership rather than constant oversight.
What You'll Be Working On
Building, querying and optimising Elasticsearch search and analytics functionality that drives our reporting products
Contributing to the ongoing modernisation of our applications, infrastructure and data pipelines
Cleaning, transforming and mapping large, messy, real-world datasets from across the liquor and retail industry to make them genuinely useful
Designing, building, testing and deploying features end to end, from database to front end
Working closely with a small development team and engaging directly with internal stakeholders to understand what needs to be built, and why
What You'll Bring
5+ years of professional software development experience
A keen interest in AI-driven software development processes and frameworks such as BMAD (Breakthrough Method of Agile AI-Driven Development); we love developers who are excited about using AI tools and agentic workflows to build better software, faster
A genuine interest in data, whether that's querying databases, writing ETL processes or building out search functionality
Experience with, or a willingness to learn, Elasticsearch or similar search and analytics tools
Familiarity with relational databases and SQL (bonus points if you've worked with Microsoft Access and understand the pain of legacy systems)
Curiosity and self-direction: you investigate problems, read the documentation and figure things out without waiting to be told
Comfort working autonomously; you'll be trusted to manage your own work and to ask good questions when you need to
Nice to Have
A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
Experience with any of Python, C#, .NET, JavaScript, PHP, Go or VBA
Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) or containerisation
Experience with APIs and third-party integrations such as Salesforce, Xero or Zoho
Familiarity with BI and reporting tools or data visualisation
An understanding of, or interest in, the liquor, FMCG or retail industry
Don't tick every box? Apply anyway. Curiosity and a willingness to learn matter more to us than a perfect checklist.
Why OnTap Data?
Real impact: your work directly powers products used by major Australian brands like Bacardi, Pernod Ricard and Suntory.
Variety: no two days are the same. You'll work across search, data, legacy modernisation and new feature development.
Ownership: as part of a small team, you'll own meaningful work from day one.
Growth: you'll broaden your skills across a wide tech stack and help shape where our platforms go next, including how we adopt AI in the way we build.
Great location: our office is in Cremorne, in the heart of Melbourne's tech precinct, with hybrid working.
