Senior Software Developer (Java) - Costa Rica
Summary
A 100% remote senior Java developer role for candidates based in Costa Rica, owning Java applications end to end — building REST APIs, microservices, and integrations with SQL databases, CI/CD, and cloud, while using AI agents as part of the daily development workflow. Initial 3-month probationary contract with the opportunity to become permanent.
We're looking for a talented and versatile Senior Software Developer with strong experience in Java and modern web technologies to join our team. In this role, you'll take ownership of software from design through production, and use AI agents as part of your regular development workflow. You'll work closely with product managers, engineers, QA, and other stakeholders to deliver features, integrations, and solutions for our clients. If you're passionate about clean code, scalable systems, modernizing applications, and using AI tools to work faster and better, we'd love to hear from you.
This position is a full-time role for an initial 3-month probationary period, with the opportunity to extend permanently based on performance and business needs. We are 100% remote, but candidates must reside in and be authorized to work in Costa Rica.
Responsibilities:
Design, build, test, and maintain Java-based applications and services across the stack.
Own production software throughout its lifecycle, driving complex initiatives independently from design through deployment and support.
Develop and maintain RESTful APIs, integrations, and backend services using Java and modern Java frameworks.
Work with relational databases, SQL, data models, and application integrations to build reliable and maintainable solutions.
Evaluate, refactor, and modernize existing applications to improve performance, scalability, maintainability, and reliability.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product, design, QA, DevOps, and business stakeholders to deliver high-quality software.
Design scalable distributed systems and service-oriented or microservice architectures.
Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, monitoring, deployment, and production support.
Troubleshoot complex technical issues across applications, APIs, integrations, databases, and supporting infrastructure.
Use AI agents as part of the development workflow for design, planning, implementation, testing, debugging, and documentation, and apply engineering judgment to validate and refine that work before it reaches production.
Design, build, and integrate AI agents and agentic workflows to automate engineering tasks and solve product challenges.
Qualifications:
5+ years of professional software development experience with a primary focus on Java.
Hands-on experience with Open Liberty or a similar Java application server/runtime platform.
Strong knowledge of Java, object-oriented programming, application architecture, and RESTful API development.
Experience working with relational databases and SQL.
Experience with enterprise applications, integrations, and distributed or microservice-based systems.
Experience with software development practices including automated testing, source control, CI/CD, deployment, and production support.
Strong debugging and problem-solving skills, with the ability to understand and troubleshoot complex applications and technical dependencies.
Experience with cloud platforms and related infrastructure.
Experience modernizing or maintaining existing/legacy Java applications.
Experience using AI-assisted development tools or AI agents as part of the software development lifecycle, with the ability to validate and refine AI-generated work before it reaches production.
Strong communication and collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively in an Agile, cross-functional environment.
Ability to work independently, take ownership of complex initiatives, and continuously learn new technologies and engineering practices.
