(Senior) Software Engineer (Android/Sensor Systems & Data Tools)

Summary

This Cork-based role builds the software and engineering tools that let advanced sensors be tested, validated, and deployed on smartphones, wearables, and smart glasses. Day to day you develop Android data-collection apps, cross-platform desktop tools in Python/C++/.NET, and end-to-end sensor-data pipelines — not conventional consumer Android apps.

We are seeking a software engineer to develop the systems, applications, and engineering tools that enable advanced sensors to be tested, validated, demonstrated, and deployed across smartphones, wearables, and smart glasses.

This is not a conventional Android Apps development role. Android is one of several platforms used to access sensors, control devices, collect data, and evaluate algorithms. The position is best suited to an engineer interested in sensor systems, data pipelines, cross-platform tooling, and the commercialisation of embedded technology.

The Role

You will build software that connects sensor hardware and algorithms with engineering teams, test participants, and customers. Your work will cover the complete flow of sensor data—from collection on a device through validation, visualisation, processing, and performance analysis.

What You´ll Do

  • Developing Android-based data-collection and sensor demonstration software.
  • Integrating physical, physiological, and environmental sensors into prototype and reference platforms.
  • Building cross-platform desktop tools for Windows and Linux using technologies such as Python, C++, .NET, and C#.
  • Creating graphical tools for device control, sensor-data validation, visualisation, and post-processing.
  • Developing robust Java or Kotlin components for system-level and device-facing applications.
  • Supporting communication between devices using technologies such as Bluetooth Low Energy, Wi-Fi, and modem-based connectivity.
  • Developing software for smartphones, wearables, smart glasses, and other emerging form factors.
  • Designing and improving end-to-end sensor-data processing pipelines.
  • Monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimising data workflows in production environments.
  • Supporting field-based data-collection programmes involving employees around the world.
  • Investigating issues affecting data-collection software running on participants’ devices.
  • Validating sensor and algorithm performance against real-world data.
  • Analysing customer datasets and providing hands-on technical support during trials, demonstrations, and commercial deployments.
  • Working with global engineering and commercial teams to bring new sensor features to market.

Background

  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • At least two years of relevant software engineering experience.
  • Experience developing software that interfaces with sensors, connected devices, embedded platforms, or system-level services.
  • Practical Android SDK experience, ideally using Android Studio, for device integration, data collection, testing, or technical demonstrations.
  • Strong object-oriented programming skills in Java or Kotlin.
  • Experience delivering reliable, production-quality software rather than solely consumer-facing mobile interfaces.
  • Proficiency in C++ and Python for system-level applications, data tools, or internal engineering utilities.
  • Experience with Git and GitHub.
  • The ability to prototype technical concepts quickly and then develop them into dependable tools.
  • Strong written and spoken English.
  • Good analytical, organisational, and communication skills, with the ability to coordinate across international teams and multiple stakeholders.

Particularly Relevant Experience

  • Physical, physiological, environmental, or motion sensors.
  • Embedded systems and hardware-software integration.
  • Sensor-data acquisition, validation, visualisation, or post-processing.
  • Algorithm testing and performance evaluation.
  • Bluetooth Low Energy, Wi-Fi, or wireless modem technologies.
  • Desktop GUI development for Windows or Linux.
  • Cloud platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Android Enterprise, MDM, MAM, or Microsoft Intune.
  • Wear OS, Android XR, or smart-glasses platforms.
  • React Native.

Important Context

This role is likely to suit a systems-minded engineer, sensor software engineer, embedded software engineer, tools developer, or data-collection platform engineer.

It is unlikely to suit candidates whose experience is limited to conventional consumer Android apps, front-end mobile interfaces, or app-store products without exposure to sensors, connected devices, system-level software, data tooling, or hardware integration.
