Senior Software Engineer
Summary
Senior Software Engineer builds and maintains a developer platform and core services using TypeScript/JavaScript and Java/Kotlin, with AI-assisted workflows and AWS/Kubernetes infrastructure.
Role Overview
The Senior Software Engineer on our Pulse Core team will be a high-impact individual contributor accelerating the velocity of all City’s Experience product teams. You will build and maintain a robust, self‑service developer platform and shared core services that embrace AI‑assisted development as part of the daily workflow. This is an execution‑focused role where you design, build, test, and own features end‑to‑end while contributing to architectural discussions and influencing technical decisions.
What makes this a Senior Engineer role (not a Tech Lead role)
- You contribute to the technical vision and architecture, but you don’t own it.
- You execute on the roadmap with a high degree of autonomy, but you are not jointly accountable for the team’s overall technical direction.
- You pair with and learn from the Tech Lead, and you mentor mid‑level engineers—uplifting the entire team’s practices is not your primary responsibility.
- You are expected to be self‑directed, able to take a loosely defined problem, break it down, and deliver a well‑tested solution with minimal guidance.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build features end‑to‑end: take ownership from requirements through design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production monitoring.
- Write high‑quality, well‑tested code in TypeScript/JavaScript for frontend work and in Java/Kotlin for backend services.
- Embrace AI‑assisted development using tools such as Claude, Cursor, or Copilot.
- Own your services in production—participate in on‑call rotations, manage deployments, incidents, monitoring, and alerting.
- Contribute to system design and infrastructure, bridging code and infrastructure across AWS and on‑premise Kubernetes.
- Collaborate, communicate, and mentor: work with Product, Design, and peers, supporting mid‑level team members through pairing, code reviews, and knowledge sharing.
Required Skills
- 5–8 years of professional software engineering experience delivering complex features in production systems.
- Deep proficiency in TypeScript and JavaScript; strong working knowledge of Java or Kotlin for backend responsibilities.
- DevOps and SRE expertise—experienced with production deployments, monitoring, alerting, and on‑call rotations.
- Infrastructure knowledge of AWS and on‑premise Kubernetes, with experience in IaC tools (e.g., Terraform) and CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions).
- System design competence—capable of designing scalable, distributed systems and articulating trade‑offs.
- Testing and quality mindset—write unit, integration, and contract tests and follow robust CI/CD principles.
- AI‑assisted development awareness—familiar with AI coding tools and enthusiastic about adopting AI‑first workflows.
