Senior Software Engineer
Summary
Senior Software Engineer at a VC-backed robotics startup in Melbourne: own software projects end-to-end for autonomous robot fleets — building fleet-monitoring dashboards, APIs, data pipelines, navigation/planning algorithms, and robot-to-cloud networking, plus internal infrastructure and security. Core stack is Python, Django, Vue.js, and Linux.
THE COMPANY
August Robotics is an international robotics startup developing autonomous robots that automate complex, labor-intensive tasks. Backed by leading venture capital investors, we are a global team with offices in the US, Greece, Germany, Australia, Hong Kong, and China.
We design and develop our robotic systems in-house, bringing together software, AI, and hardware engineering to solve challenging real-world problems. Our engineers work across the full technology stack, developing everything from autonomous navigation and fleet management systems to cloud infrastructure and software that connects robots operating in the field.
We began by transforming the exhibition industry with Lionel, our autonomous floor-marking robot, and have since expanded into construction and industrial applications. Our latest innovation, DALE, is the world's first fleet-capable autonomous downward drilling robot, developed in collaboration with DEWALT to accelerate data center construction.
In 2026, DALE was recognized as one of TIME Magazine's Best Inventions of the Year and received Fast Company's Next Big Things in Tech Award.
As we continue to grow, we're building a team of engineers who want to tackle complex technical challenges, take ownership of their work, and see the software they develop make a tangible impact on robots deployed around the world.
THE ROLE
As a Senior Software Engineer you will develop reliable, testable software, and support company-wide infrastructure tasks, helping maintain reliable and secure access to internal systems and tools.
Working closely with a cross-functional team (hardware, AI, software) and internal stakeholders, you will help design and deliver creative, end-to-end solutions. Core responsibilities include:
Contributing to technical roadmap planning and system design
Taking responsibility for software projects end-to-end, including requirements and resourcing, security and delivery
Developing interfaces and dashboards to monitor robot fleets
Implementing APIs and data pipelines
Developing fleet algorithms (eg. related to navigation or planning)
Designing networking and communication protocols between robots and the cloud
YOU MUST HAVE
Expert level programming skills in Python
Understanding of cyber security principles
Experience with web development frameworks such as Django and vue.js
Understanding of distributed applications, and communication protocols
Background in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Machine Learning or related discipline
Experience working in Linux environments
NICE TO HAVE
Experience with real-time or event-driven architectures
Familiarity with mobile robotics (eg. ROS and SLAM)
Cloud computing, bash scripting, CI/CD
You should be excited to contribute to an entrepreneurial culture, open to learning, and willing to jump in and lend a hand on a range of different tasks.
