Senior Software Engineer, Automation & Developer Tools
Summary
Senior engineer on Everlaw's Automation & Developer Tools team who builds and maintains CI/CD pipelines, automated testing systems (Cypress, GitHub Actions, CircleCI), and internal developer productivity tooling for a legal-tech SaaS platform, while mentoring QA engineers on automation practices.
As a Software Engineer in Automation & Developer Tools at Everlaw, you'll design and build the systems that let every engineer ship with confidence. This is a software engineering role where you'll own distributed test execution and internal tooling as products for our engineering team. We're looking for a strong engineer who believes that great testing is a software design problem, and who wants to make fast, trustworthy feedback loops a competitive advantage as we pursue our mission to promote justice by illuminating truth.
You'll be a part of the Platform Engineering team, and your fellow engineers will be your customers. You'll help set the technical direction, contribute to our Testing Guild, hold a high bar for code review, and ensure Everlaw maintains a high standard for reliability and quality.
Skills you are expected to possess:
- Expertise in at least one major programming language: Java, Python, Javascript, C++
- Fluency with Data Structures and Algorithms
- Experienced with usage of design patterns and coding best practices
- Designed, built, maintained, tested, and launched cloud-based software
- Led multi-developer efforts, including planning, technical breakdown, and coordination
- Mentored other engineers and consulted on issues within areas of expertise
Getting started
- We want you to feel like part of the team early on! Our onboarding process will integrate you into the company with informative sessions on our product, policies, processes, and team structure and goals.
- We’re excited for you to learn, grow, and contribute right away! We trust that you’ll bring experience and knowledge that will uplift and uplevel the team, but we don’t expect you to know everything on Day 1.
In your role, you'll...
- Architect and build test infrastructure as a product: frameworks, libraries, and services that make writing fast, reliable tests the path of least resistance.
- Design scalable CI systems (e.g., GitHub Actions, CircleCI) to keep feedback loops short as the codebase grows
- Build internal developer tools that improve developer productivity and shorten iteration cycles
- Tackle reliability problems such as flaky-test detection, test isolation, and environment/data management.
- Drive best practices in testing, observability, and release confidence across the engineering org
- Research and implement new automation approaches - including the use of AI - to stay ahead of industry trends and keep our testing infrastructure cutting-edge.
- Use coverage and failure data to guide where engineering teams invest in testing, and influence architecture so code is testable by design
- Mentor Engineers on test design, tooling, and automation best practices.
About you
- You have a BS or MS in Computer Science, or equivalent coursework.
- You have at least 5 years of professional software engineering experience, including time building or owning testing frameworks, CI systems, or developer tooling.
- You write production-quality code in a language such as C, C++, C#, Java, Python, Javascript, Go or Rust.
- You have designed or significantly improved CI/CD tools, such as GitHub Actions, CircleCI or GitLab, and you care about speed and reliability.
- You have experience building testing strategies across the stack (unit, integration, API, and end-to-end) and know when each is the right tool.
- You have a mentorship mindset and enjoy helping others grow their technical capabilities with Cypress and other automation techniques.
- You are a proactive problem-solver who can navigate Linux-based systems, and you enjoy debugging complex problems in distributed systems.
- You are passionate about testing as a core part of how great software gets built.
- You are authorized to work in the United States without restrictions. Please note that at this time, Everlaw is not sponsoring employment visas for this role.
