Senior Software Engineer - Automation
About UpDoc
At UpDoc, we are building the first clinically validated, physician-supervised AI agent that manages chronic diseases. We are an early-stage startup founded by Stanford physicians.
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Automation to find high-friction processes across engineering, operations, and compliance and replace them with reliable software. You will build internal systems and AI-enabled workflows that make UpDoc dramatically faster and easier to operate as we scale.
This is a fully remote position.
Who You Are
You’re an exceptional generalist software engineer who notices friction and can’t resist eliminating it. You can take a messy, poorly specified cross-functional process and turn it into a reliable technical solution. You move quickly, communicate well across teams, and are excited about using AI to automate workflows that were not previously practical.
What You'll Do
Own high-leverage automation projects end-to-end: identify friction, understand the real need, challenge the existing process, ship a solution, and improve it based on usage.
Automate regulatory and compliance workflows, including compliant software releases, evidence collection, traceability, documentation, approvals, and recurring compliance work.
Improve engineering productivity and developer experience through faster and more reliable CI, release tooling, debugging tools, internal developer tools, and automation of repetitive engineering work.
Build AI-enabled internal workflows for tasks such as conversation annotation, data labeling, evaluation, structured extraction, review, triage, and agentic processes, combining LLMs with deterministic software, validation, monitoring, and human review where appropriate.
Integrate internal and external systems as needed, and build reliable, maintainable production software with appropriate testing, observability, auditability, and failure handling.
What You'll Need
5+ years of professional software engineering experience, ideally in backend, platform, developer productivity, internal tools, or other generalist engineering roles.
Excellent software engineering fundamentals and strong Python skills, with experience building backend services, APIs, databases, and reliable production systems.
Ability to take an ambiguous operational or engineering problem, challenge assumptions about the existing process, and independently turn it into a shipped technical solution.
Strong judgment around system design, testing, reliability, and maintainability, with a track record of moving quickly and taking end-to-end ownership.
Strong written and verbal communication and the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical teams.
Highly Desired
Experience building production AI- or LLM-enabled automation, including structured outputs, tool use, evaluation, monitoring, and safeguards.
Experience building developer productivity, CI/CD, release engineering, or internal tooling.
Experience with regulatory, compliance, quality, security, or other auditable workflows, such as FDA-regulated software or SOC 2.
Experience building internal systems at an early-stage or rapidly scaling company.
