Summary
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you'll build and maintain systems connecting physical hardware to backend services, working on both embedded devices and scalable cloud infrastructure using Python on AWS.
Archer is an aerospace company based in San Jose, California building an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft with a mission to advance the benefits of sustainable air mobility. We are designing, manufacturing, and operating an all-electric aircraft that can carry four passengers while producing minimal noise.

Role Overview
Archer is best known for Midnight, our electric aircraft. This role isn't on that program. The AI Products Org is building software for the general aviation industry. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you'll build and maintain systems that servie as a critical link between physical hardware and backend services. You may write software that runs on embedded devices one day and scalable cloud services the next, requiring both breadth across systems and the ability to dive deep when needed.
Responsibilities

Design, build, and maintain software systems that span edge devices and cloud infrastructure

Develop and support software running on Raspberry Pi and similar embedded environments

Build scalable backend services using Python on AWS

Ensure reliable data flow and system integration between hardware and cloud services

Monitor system performance and troubleshoot production issues across hardware and software boundaries

Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code following engineering best practices

Adapt to changing priorities by contributing across software development, infrastructure, and hardware testing as needed
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field

Strong proficiency in Python

Experience building or managing applications on AWS

Proven problem-solving skills and the ability to debug complex, cross-disciplinary systems

Demonstrated hands-on experience through projects, internships, or professional work is valued over years of tenure
Preferred Qualifications

Experience with edge computing or embedded systems (Raspberry Pi, GPIO, Sensors)

Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform

Experience working with SQL and/or NoSQL databases

Knowledge of containerization technologies such as Docker

Willingness to learn and work with additional languages or frameworks as needed (e.g., Rust)

At Archer we aim to attract, retain, and motivate talent that possess the skills and leadership necessary to grow our business. We drive a pay-for-performance culture and reward performance that supports the Company’s business strategy. For this position we are targeting a base pay between $145,000.00 - $180,000.00. Actual compensation offered will be determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
